As a Transportation Counsel, you'll work with the XPO North American Transportation Legal Department and provide leadership and direction to the business as a corporate generalist, with a focus on transportation and logistics related matters. This position provides direction and guidance in accordance with XPO legal philosophies, working with both the corporate and business teams to ensure legal risk is mitigated.

What you'll do on a typical day:


  • Review, negotiate, and draft contracts across a variety of business functions including customer agreements, subcontractor agreements, vendor agreements, NDAs and technology agreements and licenses.

  • Provide litigation and discovery support to the business units and the claims management teams; work with and manage outside counsel as needed.

  • Provide timely, accurate, and strategic legal advice and risk mitigation strategies to internal business representatives and

  • Lead and/or collaborate on certain divisional projects and initiatives related to legal, compliance and/or regulatory matters.

  • Support senior management regarding contractual interpretation and enforcement of commercial agreements.

  • Identify legal risks for the company and vendors to identify issues, negotiate resolutions, and respond to inquiries.

  • Assist in the development and redesign of legal support processes, templates, standard operating procedures, and both internal and client facing materials to drive greater internal efficiencies for the legal department and business teams.

  • Develop and deliver training to internal clients on various legal topics.

  • Coordinate with other in-house counsel on a wide variety of issues related to transportation and litigation activities.


What you need to succeed at XPO:

At a minimum, you'll need:


  • J.D. from an accredited law school

  • 5 years of experience as a practicing attorney


It'd be great if you also have:

  • 7 years of experience as a practicing attorney with excellent academic performance

  • A strong background in commercial contracting (drafting, reviewing & negotiating complex contracts)

  • Experience in commercial litigation and transportation claims, specifically motor carrier, air, ocean, and rail transportation

  • Knowledge of transportation regulations and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.
