Utility Mechanic I at New Jersey American Water

Primary Role



Performs any responsibility that lies within the capability of the employee based on experience, knowledge, qualifications, and training.





Key Accountabilities




  • Coordinate, monitor, and control the safe and efficient utilization of Company equipment and assigned personnel.

  • Locate, access, operate, and repair Company facilities such as, but not limited to, mains, hydrants, blow-offs, services, curb stops,

  • shutoff valves, plumbing fixtures, clean-outs and manholes.

  • Investigate and diagnose hydraulic variations that may adversely impact system operations and customer service, and initiate corrective action.

  • As directed by the Company, inspect the installation of water mains, valves, fittings, fire hydrants, and services to insure the facilities are installed in accord with Company policies, procedures, and contracts.

  • Perform distribution system tests including, but not limited to, fire flows, customer service lines, and pressure losses.

  • Complete house-to-house connections at customers’ accounts to maintain service.

  • Locate Company facilities, and in accord with the Underground Facility other utilities’ facilities.

  • Raise to grade Company facilities such as, but not limited to, frameups, meter boxes, tiles, curb and valve boxes, clean-outs and manholes.

  • Operate and repair Company facilities such as, but not limited to, fire hydrants and distribution system valves.

  • Complete the installation of facilities including, but not limited to, water services, main extensions, fire hydrants, valves, blow-offs, sewer services and sewer mains.

  • Obtain and record meter readings to insure accurate billing of customers’ accounts within established timeframes.

  • Collect and evaluate process control samples, as directed, in accord with established practices.

  • Transport materials to and from Company facilities and/or job sites.




Additional Key Accountabilities




  • Record pertinent data and maintain accurate records which will be turned in to the Company in a timely manner.

  • Report conditions in the field that may adversely impact customer service or the public safety, as well as conditions that may result in potential damage to Company facilities.

  • Conduct water loss audits including, but not limited to, pipe and fixture inspections and usage patterns at customers’ accounts. either individually or in conjunction with other employees.

  • The Utility Install and/or remove meters.

  • Respond to inquiries accurately and professionally and, when Company-related issues and to achieve the highest level of customer service in all areas of responsibility.

  • The Utility Mechanic I may be assigned to perform responsibilities capabilities of the employee based on experience, knowledge, qualifications, and training.  necessary, involve appropriate individuals to resolve customer and

  • Mechanic I may also be assigned to direct other employees. May be assigned to perform any responsibility that lies within 

  • Prepare Company facilities for adverse weather conditions.

  • Restore service to frozen Company facilities, as required.




Knowledge/Skills




  • The Utility Mechanic I must possess geographical knowledge of the Company’s service area and distribution system as well as an understanding of gradients, piping networks, basic fluid and flow principles, and basic electrical theory and related safety procedures.

  • The individual must be capable of interpreting diagrams, blueprints, schematics and maps.

  • The individual must possess a working knowledge of the various materials utilized in the transmission and distribution system and possess the ability to properly and safely make necessary taps, restraints, and repairs to insure the integrity of the transmission, distribution, and collection system.

  • The Utility Mechanic I must have a working knowledge and understanding of contracts covering the installation of water mains, valves, fittings, fire hydrants and services to insure that facilities are installed in accord with the contract.

  • The Utility Mechanic I must have a working knowledge of Company policies, procedures, and safety practices applicable to area of responsibility as well as federal regulations regarding confined spaces, trenching and shoring, and Competent Person.

  • The individual must be detail oriented and capable of preparing and maintaining accurate records and documents.

  • The individual must be capable of operating Company equipment and vehicles necessary for the completion of assigned responsibilities and must possess a commercial driver’s license with appropriate endorsements.

  • The individual must be able to perform the essential functions and meet the physical requirements of Utility Mechanic I.




Experience/Education




  • Must pass the Level II examination.

  • Employees hired on or after October 15, 1996 will also be required to attend and successfully complete the NJDEP Introduction to Water/Wastewater course (180 hours)

  • HS Diploma/GED required

  • Certifications & Licenses:

  • Must possess a valid commercial driver’s license with appropriate endorsements.
