Sourcing Geologist



Your task structure



Primary Objectives:


  • To work with existing clay suppliers to ensure required quality and quantity of supply to BYK's existing global products is maintained.

  • Based on business priorities, actively seek and propose credible new and alternative clay sources to the organization to

    • Ensure stable long-term sourcing for existing products

    • To provide options for enhancement (quality, cost or security) of existing products.

    • To provide bases for potential new or novel products.



Duties and Responsibilities:


  • To develop, document and maintain external relationships/contacts throughout the global raw clay supply world at

    • Existing BYK suppliers.

    • Potential BYK suppliers

    • Industry groups (e.g. EUBA)

    • Key institutions (universities, country geological services)

    • Professional groups




  • To maintain strong internal relationships with all relevant internal functions globally, particularly

    • R&D

    • Purchasing

    • Product Management

    • Operations at clay using sites




  • To ensure a long-term stable clay sourcing strategy for existing products is in place, updating and communicating changes to key stakeholders at least annually, recommending projects or changes to enhance security, quality and/or cost.

  • To work with and alongside, as necessary, supplier geologists to develop mining plans to allow short term extraction of and longer-term visibility of defined clay qualities.

  • To, together with the suppliers and consuming sites, develop and maintain mid and long-term reserve specific quality systems (including bore holing, stockpiling and sampling plans) to ensure stability of incoming clay supplies, allowing anticipation of potential future issues.

  • To monitor, with internal stakeholders, product quality shifts that may result from changing input clay properties and work with all stakeholders (internal and external) to understand and control.

  • To, with R&D, develop and maintain, a provenanced sample screening database of all known reserves which are or may be available to BYK.

  • To actively seek provenanced samples to expand the above database.

  • To work as a key part in, or lead, multidisciplinary teams to develop sourcing options for new and enhanced products, from audit visits to working with suppliers geologists/mining engineers in opening new or expanding existing deposits.

  • To fill in for, when and if necessary, the Mining Manager with respect to the operational extraction of the company's own reserves.

Qualifications, Knowledge and Skills


Essential


  • Degree level qualification in Geology, Geological Sciences or related discipline.

  • Minimum 5 years post qualification experience in a non-hydrocarbon extractive industry, preferably with significant post extraction processing.

  • Commercially aware with strong networking skills.

  • Basic familiarity with and interest in mineral processing technology.

  • Strong initiative with ability to develop own task plans.

  • Ability and willingness to travel internationally

Desirable


  • Interest in mineralogy and associated analytical techniques in a 'soft rock' environment.

  • Previous international exposure and cultural adaptability.

  • Experience in working in multidisciplinary teams on complex projects

  • Understanding of bulk/semi-bulk international supply chains.

  • Language skills
