Structural Welder Shipfitter SEA Coach



Position Summary:

Life Cycle Engineering is looking for a qualified Structural Welder / Shipfitter SEA Coach to join our team in Apra Harbor, Guam. The selected candidate will provide over the shoulder technical support and engineering best practices guidance, as well as small group and work center level training on various Welding and Shipfitting trade skills and techniques to Fleet Maintenance Activity Sailors assigned to the two Submarine Tenders in Guam. This SEA Coach position is an "on the deckplate" opportunity for molding the Navy's Submarine Repair Technicians of the future. This is a full time position located in Guam -- currently only seeking local candidates (as of Dec 2020).



Contract Requirements:



  • Must be a US citizen with a CURRENT and ACTIVE DoD Secret security clearance.


Essential Functions and Responsibilities:


  • Assist Fleet Maintenance Activity Personnel in planning, training for and execution of primarily Submarine Repairs at an intermediate maintenance activity level during 3 month rotational periods throughout the year.

  • Assist Maintenance Personnel in developing assessment and repair skills and techniques to assure first time quality repairs to forward deployed Naval Vessels. Assessment skill and maintenance technique training topics cover a wide range depending on Sailor experience and repair complexity and may include:

    • Identification and documenting of system and/or equipment "as found" problems

    • Identification of scope of work through use of historical repair documents and ship checks

    • Basic to advanced tooling and test equipment usage and understanding of testing results

    • Develop and provide on-the job training (OJT) based on observed trends in maintenance skills

    • Assess workcenter tooling and test equipment for recommended upgrades to improve efficiency or throughput capacity

    • Provide over the shoulder guidance during in progress work onboard Naval Units to enable Sailors to successfully complete all assigned tasks on an extremely wide range of Piping and Hull Structure repairs, removals and installations.




Required Education, Skills, and Experience:


  • Minimum of ten (10) years of Piping and / or Structural maintenance experience in the repair, maintenance and assessment of US Naval Vessel Hulls to include but not limited to:


    • Sheet Metal layout and assembly methods

    • Shipfitting technics including layout, structural member cutting, joint designs, weld joint preparation, distortion control, welding processes and techniques

    • Pipe welding, including P1, Level 1 and SUBSAFE requirements and testing

    • Demonstrate an ability to interpret technical drawings, technical manuals, and historical TGIs and the ability as Subject Matter Expert (SME) to guide Naval Maintenance Personnel in preparation and execution of maintenance using these documents



  • Familiarity with current industry welding, cutting and shaping equipment.

  • Ability to utilize computers including the Microsoft Office Suite for compiling information for reports and history files

  • Ability to communicate effectively in writing and orally.


Physical Demands and Expectations:


  • Regular physical activity to include walking, climbing stairs, and standing; frequent periods of prolonged sitting / kneeling may be required.

  • Maneuvering around tight spaces in a shipboard environment

  • Ability to speak, read, hear, and write, with or without assistance.

  • Ability to use phone and computer systems, copier, scanner and other office equipment.
