General Summary/Overview:

The Associate Medical Director is a physician leader and manager on the BWPO Care Strategies and Innovation (BCSI) Team.

Working with the BWPO Chief Medical Officer, Associate Chief Medical Officer and Executive Director and as an active member of the BCSI Leadership Team, comprised of Associate/Assistant Medical Director peers, and Administrative Directors, the Associate Medical Director actively participates in the advancement of clinical care redesign, population health management and value-based care strategies. S/he provides relevant clinical context, active strategic thanking, and day-to-day management support to other BCSI Team staff members to enable the team to drive quality, efficiency, and strategy. Core leadership competencies include teamwork, executing to drive results, communicating effectively, coaching and mentoring, thinking strategically, networking and influencing, and leadership.

Under the direction of the BWPO Chief Medical Officer, the Associate Medical Director BWPO leads the development of the strategy and the management of all aspects of programs/projects within his/her portfolio. These responsibilities include the design of the strategy in alignment with broader PO, hospital and/or Mass General Brigham strategy; oversight of the project execution to ensure goals, timelines, and budgets are met; management of the individual team members and overall team; and effective communication of the status of this work to the BWPO Chief Medical Officer, full BCSI team and other key stakeholders across MGB and Brigham Health.

S/he will have the ability and expectation to directly and indirectly manage within a matrixed organization staff, either with team members who have a direct HR reporting relationship and/or may work directly on his/her initiatives but have a separate direct HR reporting relationship. Indirect management responsibilities include contributing to the annual performance review, offering real-time coaching and feedback, and coordination with a team members' direct leader.

Care Management Oversight:

Oversight of Care Management leadership team, including Assistant Medical Director, Program Directors, Program Manager, Project Manager and Pharmacist, to ensure successful development, implementation, and integration of complex care management programs within relevant departments and across care continuum. Communication to Executive Leadership and key stakeholders including Primary Care and hospital leadership regarding strategy, milestones and results.

Value Based Care Strategy:


  1. Medicare and Commercial Risk Strategy

    1. ACO Program strategy and development in collaborating local BWPO & Brigham Health leadership




  1. Medicaid Strategy

    1. Development, implementation, and measurement of Medicaid ACO programs for BH ACO patients

      1. Primary Care: iCMP Plus, SW Care Coordinators, Social Care Team (CHW, CRS, Housing, Recovery Coaches), Social Determinants of Health Screening, Community Partners Program

      2. ED: Care Transitions Specialists/ED CHW



    2. Development and execution of BH care navigation strategy for patients belonging to other ACOs, in collaboration with Ambulatory and CCM




  1. High Risk Care Management Program (iCMP):

    1. Development and measurement of expanded portfolio of specialized services to meet identified gaps in complex care coordination for high risk patients, while improving program efficiency.

    2. Development and integration of Specialty Specific Programs, including:

      1. Palliative Care Management: Expansion of palliative care services to reach additional patients; integration within care continuum structure

      2. Post Acute/SNF Waiver

      3. Pharmacy Management

      4. CHF

      5. ESRD

      6. Behavioral Health

      7. Specialty pilot programs (Rheumatology-iCMP, Children's Hybrid Transitions)






  1. Population Health Performance Oversight

    1. Clinical representation of Brigham Health at MGB Performance Advisory Committee and Performance Review Committee

    2. Facilitation of BWH/BWPO local team implementation of strategies and tactics to meet performance targets within the Internal Performance Framework (IPF)

    3. Delivery of quarterly Population Health Performance Updates to BWPO senior leadership to guide strategic focus and planning for areas of concern or opportunity



BCSI Team Leadership:


  1. Guide strategic development and prioritization of overall team priorities in collaboration with ACMO, CMO and Executive Director

  2. Bi-weekly meetings with other members of BCSI Leadership Team; bi-weekly meetings with full BCSI Team

  3. Responsible for coordination and collaboration with other members of BCSI Leadership Team to ensure staffing is adequate for Care Management Programs and other team programs

  4. Advance team development work around values, behaviors, and growth

Skill and Abilities Required:


  • Requires skills and experience facilitating clinical teams and understanding group dynamics.

  • Experience engaging and communicating with physicians in process improvement and strategic projects.

  • Excellent verbal and written skills, to communicate effectively with a wide range of departments and individuals at all levels throughout the organization.

  • Experience using a variety of improvement and redesign tools and techniques such as process mapping, root cause analysis, design and prototyping, rapid cycle testing and change management.

  • Extensive experience working with administrative healthcare and clinical data preferred.

  • Skill in use of Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint and Outlook.

Working Conditions:

Fast-paced matrixed environment, requiring teamwork, collaboration and flexibility.

Supervisory Responsibility:

Oversight in a direct reporting relationship of Assistant Medical Director and Pharmacist, as well as indirect management responsibilities of Program Directors, Program Manager and other BCSI staff within matrixed structure.

Fiscal Responsibility:

Accountable for oversight of budget for specific projects and programs.


Qualifications


  • MD with board certification with at least 5 years of practice experience.

  • Extensive management experience in an academic medical center or complex health care system preferred

  • Additional management degree (e.g., MBA, MPH) preferred.

  • Track record in completing process redesign, quality improvement, and project management work.

  • Effective facilitation skills within large dynamic groups required, with specific preference for experience facilitating physicians and clinical teams in performance improvement and/or behavior change.

  • Demonstrated expertise in managing and communicating among working relationships in matrix structure
