Position Objective:

The Surgical Technologist - Surgical First Assistant functions under the supervision of the Registered Nurse in the Operating Room to deliver safe, quality care. The Surgical Technologist - Surgical First Assistant assumes responsibilities within the operating room as delegated by the Operating Room RN, and the Surgeon, and is accountable for his/her own practice. The Surgical Technologist - Surgical First Assistant provides technical skills to assist the Surgeon in the operating room in performing a safe operation with optimal results for the patient. The peri-operative and intra-operative practice of the Surgical Technologist - Surgical First Assistant will vary considerably with the needs of the Operating Room, and the needs of the Surgeon.

Patient Population Served :

The Surgical Technologist - Surgical First Assistant is expected to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care based on the physical ability, intellectual development, psycho-social education and safety needs of the pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patient.

Essential Position Functions :

The following functions must be able to be carried out by the incumbent with or without reasonable accommodation under the direct supervision of the operating surgeon and general direction of the OR Clinical Team Leader and Director, Surgical Services, within hospital and department policies and procedures:


  1. Functions in the 1st and 2nd scrub roles, assisting in surgery under the direct supervision of the surgeon.

  2. Establishes and maintains a sterile environment by applying principles of asepsis, infection control, and continued monitoring of the sterile field.

  3. Implements his/her actions to meet patient needs and problems in an efficient manner with appropriate utilization of resources.

  4. Uses creativity and sound judgment in adapting his/her interventions to fit the patient's needs.

  5. Acts as a resource person for staff and participates as a team member in achieving optimal patient outcomes.

  6. Demonstrates knowledge of normal and pathologic anatomy and physiology.

  7. Initiates appropriate intra-operative behaviors unique to first assisting:

    1. Provides hemostasis to reduce potential for postoperative infection and potential fluid volume deficit by clamping and/or ligating vessels using electrosurgical cautery, applying direct pressure, applying chemical agents that promote coagulation, and other means as directed by the surgeon.

    2. Provides exposure of the operative site through the appropriate use of retractors and other instruments and through suctioning and sponging.

    3. Uses surgical instruments skillfully in ways consistent with their design and purpose as directed by the surgeon.

    4. Handles all varieties of tissues appropriately to reduce potential for injury or compromised blood supply.

    5. Sutures tissues skillfully with the appropriate suture materials and suturing techniqu



  8. Recognizes surgical hazards in relation to potential complications and initiates appropriate actions.

  9. Performs effectively in stressful and emergent situations.

  10. Establishes and maintains a safe environment by implementing safety procedures to protect the patient and health care team.

  11. Identifies and organizes supplies and equipment to maintain an efficient, effective and safe intra- operative environment in collaboration with the surgical team members and support service personnel.

  12. Reorganizes priorities and plan of care on a continual basis.

  13. Is proficient and knowledgeable in equipment use and recognition of malfunction.

  14. Demonstrates a positive attitude, which promotes an atmosphere of warmth and caring.

  15. Acts as a patient advocate and liaison with other disciplines.

  16. Communicates appropriately to promote positive and professional relationships with peers, hospital employees, physicians, patients and their family.

  17. Complies with hospital policies and established standards of practice related to safe patient care.

  18. Maintains certification as applicable, maintains unit and role specific mandatory education and competency.

  19. Dependable and punctual.

  20. Delivers all patient care in a professional manner, maintaining patient dignity, confidentiality and safety.

Qualifications

Position Qualifications:


  • Graduate from an accredited school/military program of Surgical Technology or current national certification in Surgical Technology (CST).

  • NH Medical Technician Board registration is required if not currently licensed or registered by a NH regulatory board.

  • 2 years experience in the scrub role.

  • Current certification in BLS.

  • Successful completion of all didactic and clinical components within a course of study from a surgical first assisting program. This program must be approved by Frisbie Memorial Hospital and meet the educational requirements supported and acknowledged by the Association of Surgical Technologists (AST).

  • Behaviors that progress on a continuum from basic competency to excellence.

  • Maintenance of Surgical First Assistant competency required.
