Flex's multiple Design & Innovation sites are each part of the engineering development focus that is pushing the boundaries in product design and performance. Chartered with assisting our customers in innovative product designs, the Flex innovation and design community are working on cutting edge products across all industries.   Utilizing the latest technology advancements, the Austin Innovation Center, part of the Catalyzing Innovation organization, focuses in broad, open ended problem areas, where requirements are less defined.  This creates a fast-paced, technically challenging environment set for collaboration, innovation, and creativity to create the products of tomorrow.

Currently, the Catalyzing Innovation organization is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to join team with the responsibility for mechanical product design.  As a member of the engineering team this individual will have a key role in understanding the product requirements, proposing design solutions and helping customers, architect, develop, implement and bring to market world class solutions.

Here is a glimpse of what you’ll do…


  • Hands on leadership of individual design projects from architectural design, high level cad design, low level cad design, build, bring up, test, and success release to manufacturing.

  • Review customer proposals, internal PRDs, and work with broader team to drive toward robust and cost effective solutions.

  • Collaborate with a cross functional team of industrial designers, electrical, textile and software engineers, and program management to develop successful product. Manage design parameters and design tradeoff priorities.

  • Ability to determine, define, design the system and subsystems to meet project and program design, goals, requirements, and schedules.

  • Help develop best practices for ME product development, identify equipment needs, and technically mentor other members of the team.

  • Identify standard products and sub-blocks for inclusion into solution proposals.

  • Develop key relationships with internal design teams as well subcontractors to plan comprehensive product strategies based on future technologies.

  • Interact as a technical and market expert with engineering teams and customers to achieve product goals.

  • Work with suppliers to fabricate and deliver product in tight timelines.

  • Interact frequently with customers and/or functional peer group managers. May interact with senior management; frequently interact with middle management and individual contributor groups

  • Be responsible for maintaining excellent customer relations with both new and existing customers

Here is some of what you’ll need (required)…


  • Bachelor’s degree (BSc, BEng) or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering.

  • Minimum 8 years of Mechanical Engineering experience.

  • Possess strong problem-solving skills, the ability to think analytically and solid oral and written communication skills.

  • Related technical experience in developing and supporting mechanical designs and experience with CAD software such as 3+years SolidWorks, PDM, etc.

  • Familiar with rapid prototyping techniques and equipment.

  • Deep experience designing electro-mechanical interfaces and E/M packaging.

  • Experience with designs using various materials such as sheet metals, plastics, adhesives, rubber, silicones, urethanes, and fabrics.

  • Experience in designing parts for various manufacturing techniques such as injection molding, die-cast, extrusion, waterproofing, and encapsulation techniques.

  • Experience in designing products using the latest processes, colors, materials, and finishes for consumer electronics products.

  • Experience with CAD statistical analysis and tolerance analysis, surfacing, and assembly interfaces along with design for manufacturing needs.

  • Knowledge and experience in tooling for mass production and tooling related issues affecting design.

  • Solid understanding of overall system level design approaches.

  • Geometric dimensioning and tolerance experience.

  • Interest to stay abreast of new cutting-edge technologies, market trends, and changing customer needs.

  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.

  • Excels in task and organizational management to handle a diverse array of projects and tasks simultaneously.
