Iowa Western Community College is currently seeking a part-time, educational Sign Language Interpreter to join our team at our Council Bluffs, Iowa campus. This position reports directly to the Coordinator of Disability Services. The Interpreter will be responsible for facilitating communication between our Deaf/hard of hearing students and the faculty, staff, and other students. The Interpreter should prepare for class assignments by reading textbooks, syllabi and supplemental materials. The Interpreter will maintain and submit accurate timesheets, interpreting logs, and reports in a timely manner.
Required Qualification

Associate Degree in Sign Language Interpreting is required. Iowa Interpreting License, provisional or permanent, is required.
The Sign Language Interpreter should have a demonstrated fluency in American Sign Language as well as the ability to interpret in sign-to-voice and voice-to-sign, as required.
The Interpreter should show a comprehensive understanding of Deaf culture, as well as a willingness to be a positive member of the Iowa Western team
Preferred Qualification

EIPA score of 3.5 or higher or RID Certification is strongly preferred.
Experience working with Deaf/hard-of-hearing adults in a post-secondary educational environment is preferred.
Physical Demands

Include occasional lifting of 10 lbs., ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time, use hands to operate a computer keyboard, telephone and other basic office equipment. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear and use a phone. Some travel, by vehicle, may be required. Reading, writing, calculating, social interaction skills, strong management and organizational skills, reasoning/analysis, ability work with minimal supervision, high degree of problem-solving, decision-making skills and high degree of interpersonal skills is required. Work is routinely performed in an office environment.
Hiring process includes ability to pass a background check, a valid U.S Driver's license, and a good driving record.
Considerable learned physical skill is required to perform sign language. Certain coordinated finger, limb or body movements must be performed routinely in the course of regular work. Extended standing or sitting is required. Constant repetitive motion and mental processing is required.
Salary : $30.00/hr
