Our Denver/Golden, CO office is currently seeking a Mid-Level Biologist with a strong wildlife background to support a variety of projects primarily within our energy practice. Our energy practice includes routing, siting, and permitting of wind and solar energy power generation, electric transmission lines and substations, natural gas pipelines, and other related facilities. This position could involve providing biological services for water resources, mining, or other projects.

In this role, we are looking for an enthusiastic biologist with experience in field surveys biological resources and technical report writing. The primary responsibility of the position would be to conduct field surveys for wildlife, particularly birds by sight/sound, vegetation/habitat, and special-status species. The position would require that the individual be proficient in task management, including data collection, data management, and technical writing.

The position would require a combination of field and office work and would be based out of the Golden, CO office. Fieldwork would take place in a variety of climates and ecological regions with a focus in the Western and Central U.S. The position would require an ability to balance office work responsibilities as well.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct field surveys for biological resources (wildlife with an avian focus, habitat/vegetation, special-status species).

  • Write technical reports, proposals, and review reports prepared by peers.

  • Develop cost estimates for biological resource tasks for a range of projects.

  • Work concurrently on several projects each at different phases.

  • Travel extensively during the field season.

    Requirements:


  • Expertise in conducting field surveys for wildlife, including special-status species that occur in Colorado, both independently and as part of a team.

  • Ability to conduct avian surveys such as raptor nest surveys, point-count surveys by sight and sound, and/or burrowing owl surveys.

  • Experience in writing technical reports, describing baseline conditions, and analyzing impacts on protected species and their habitat.

  • Knowledge and understanding of federal and state regulations pertaining to wildlife and plants.

  • Attention to detail, ability to work independently, willingness to work as part of team, and the ability to stay positive and effective during long days in the field.

  • Willing to work in sometimes difficult conditions and often miles from a vehicle. Physical challenges typically encountered may include long off-trail hikes, steep slopes, extreme hot and cold conditions, and biological hazards (animals and plants).

  • Data management and excellent oral and written communication skills are essential.

  • Safety conscience and continually assess ways to mitigate hazards.

  • Possess a valid driver's license.

  • Able to work with and communicate with a diverse group of co-workers and clients to provide high quality and efficient work products.

    Education, Experience, and Qualifications:


  • Bachelor's degree in natural sciences.

  • At least 3 years of experience with 5 years preferred.

  • A strong background of coursework and/or experience in a natural science (e.g., birds, botany, ecology) and field data collection.

  • Demonstrated ability to identify birds and other wildlife by sight and sound.

  • Ability to identify and describe vegetation and habitat quality as it relates to certain species.

  • Demonstrated ability to perform basic data analyses, compile data, and write technical documents.

  • Demonstrated ability to use and create spreadsheets or databases to summarize data and create tables.

  • Comfortable with mobile technology (e.g. cell phone, tablet) for electronic data collection.

    Other Desirable Knowledge and Experience:


  • Positive attitude, willingness to learn, and enjoyment of working outdoors.

  • Experience conducting lesser-prairie chicken surveys, habitat assessments for Preble's meadow jumping mouse, and surveys for other special-status species that occur in Colorado in addition to the Western and Central U.S.

  • Experience writing proposals and estimating costs.

  • Ability to identify rare plants and noxious weeds.

  • Ability to effectively communicate with regulatory agencies and clients.

  • Experience with wetland delineations.

  • Ability to research and interpret federal, state, and local regulations on a project-specific basis to assess project permitting feasibility and requirements.

  • Experience with environmental impact analysis related to energy and land management projects; biological resources mitigation, design and monitoring; and construction monitoring.
