Attorney position within Legal Department providing full range of legal counsel and support in the areas of state licensing, federal permits, operational compliance, and new product development for beer, wine & spirits at Constellation Brands, reporting to Vice President, Associate General Counsel, with an emphasis on state and federal licensing.
*This role will be remote to start and ultimately sit out of our Head Quarters in Victor, NY. Relocation is available.*
Responsibilities
Independently handle legal matters and regulatory projects ranging from basic to complex. Recognizes when to elevate certain matters to the attention of the Associate General Counsel.
Support and direct work of Regulatory Affairs team, providing project oversight and legal guidance.
Lead regulatory due diligence on potential acquisitions, strategic investments, and divestitures. Act as regulatory lead on any subsequent integration for new facilities and brands.
Research law and investigates facts on legal questions or issues in the areas of state licensing, federal permitting structure, excise tax, CBMA, claim substantiation and alcohol beverage labeling and formulation.
Collaborate with Company’s operations, logistics, quality, and innovation teams to assess business objectives and advise on legal risks.
Develop legal strategies and timelines necessary to modify Company’s production and storage facilities. Direct efforts of outside counsel from time to time.
Engage directly with state and federal regulatory agencies to build and maintain relationships. Act as a liaison between Company and agency counsel on matters under legal review.
Review new concepts and evaluate product claims against regulations and regulatory enforcement actions; assess risk and advise on adequate substantiation requirements for product claims. Research emerging trends and develop guidance documents that support the business.
Active involvement in industry trade groups as representative for Constellation Brands.
Recommended Qualifications
J.D. from accredited law school and license to practice law required
Admission to and good standing in relevant state bar
3-6 years of practice in-house for a CPG company or broad-based private firm, preferably within a corporate legal department
Familiarity with and experience researching and interpreting TTB, FDA and state alcohol beverage regulations.
Strong written, analytical, verbal, and presentation skills
Demonstrated ability to build relationships, think outside of the box and achieve results
Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment
Skilled in handling tight deadlines, changing priorities and multiple simultaneous issues of immediate concern, and willingness to work hard
Superior interpersonal, organizational and communication skills; sincere appreciation for working as part of commercial team with wide variety of levels, roles and personalities in in-house environment; excellent professional judgment; confidence to act and provide legal advice independently; personal humility
High proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Teams also required
