ABOUT UTHEALTH and McGOVERN MEDICAL SCHOOL

Located in the heart of the Texas Medical Center, the largest medical complex in the world, UTHealth is home to John P. and Kathrine G. McGovern Medical School, Jane and Robert Cizik School of Nursing, and schools of dentistry, public health, biomedical sciences, and biomedical informatics. UT Physicians, UT Health Services, and UT Dentists provide quality, compassionate care to the community through more than 2,000 clinician providers in nearly 80 specialties across the Greater Houston Area.

The eighth-largest medical school, McGovern Medical School, is well-position to leverage tremendous momentum. The medical school's operating budget has increased from $375 million to $1.3 billion. Research expenditures have soared from $95 million to $166 million. The medical school raises $35 million annually.

POSITION SUMMARY

The next Dean has the opportunity to develop a vision, to inspire others, and to provide strong leadership. The person will work for an extraordinary leader, President Giuseppe N. Colasurdo, and live in one of the fastest-growing and the most diverse cities in the United States. Houston is a philanthropically generous area, and the Dean will have access to donors committed to the school's continued success and excellence.

The Dean stewards the medical school's strategic, academic, clinical, and business affairs, partnering with vice, associate, and assistant deans, chairs, and faculty members, and with clinical administrative executives. The Dean guides activities of vice, associate and assistant deans, and departmental chairpersons within the medical school to accomplish the mission of the school within guidelines established by the Board of Regents' Rules and Regulations and The University of Texas System. With oversight for the Dean's office staff consisting of a substantial number of executive associate deans, associate deans, assistant deans, directors, and administrative staff, the Dean also provides leadership to the Basic Science and Clinical chairs. The Dean is a member of the President's University Executive Council and the Dean's Council. Building upon an incredible foundation of excellence, growth, and strength, the new medical school's Dean will have the opportunity to bring innovation, creativity, and ideas to the institution.

CANDIDATE PROFILE

The most compelling candidates for this critical appointment will possess the following:

Leadership: Exhibits servant leadership qualities with a significant academic leadership experience with a progressive record of transformative change and collaboration with a proven track record promoting the tri-partite mission of research, education, and clinical care. Experience in setting and articulating an academic vision, executing a strategy, directing recruitment, and increasing resources. An ability to inspire confidence and to create followership is essential. An innovative thinker with the courage and gravitas to be viewed as a leader internally and externally is essential.

Interpersonal Skills and Emotional Intelligence: A high level of energy and confidence with a can-do attitude that promotes teamwork, a personal style that is collaborative, positive, upbeat, and solutions-oriented, and the ability to inspire faculty, students, and staff to build trust and transparency. Emotionally intelligent, strong influencing, coaching and relationship skills, a reputation for transparency, integrity, and ethical behavior with a passion for excellence.

Financial Acumen and Administrative and People Management: An understanding of the complex financial pressures facing medical schools and academic healthcare delivery organizations is key. Evidence driving operational efficiency is necessary. Specific understanding of the potential impact of healthcare reform on the mission of academic medicine and public health is highly valued.

CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS

Academic Credentials: An MD (or equivalent) degree and credentials that would warrant appointment at the academic rank of Full Professor are required. An additional advanced degree desirable.

Accomplishment and Achievement: This individual must have an exceptional track record of accomplishments and success as a clinician, physician-scientist (possess a deep reservoir of federally-funded basic, translational, or clinical research), and/or educator (viewed as a leader in undergraduate or graduate medical education) in academic medicine. The new Dean will be known for promoting patient-centered and compassionate care and will ideally practice medicine.

Recruitment, Retention, and Mentoring: An exemplary track record of hiring, motivating, and mentoring department chairs, vice, associate, and assistant deans, and senior administrative staff. Proven success recruiting individuals from diverse backgrounds is vital. An ability to recruit the very best is highly valued at the medical school.
