The Senior Operations Manager will manage the plant operation to meet all safety, food safety, quality, and productivity objectives with 24/7 responsibility. This position has 15-20 direct reports (Production Supervisors and Team Leads) and ensures compliance to Ferrara corporate quality and food safety policies, procedures and applicable standards.

Responsibilities, Challenges, and Opportunities:
  • Manages activities of the day to day production of finished goods including both processing and packaging to ensure smooth, efficient plant operation.
  • Monitors safety, quality, and sanitation standards to ensure compliance with established company standards. Adheres to budget and cost control practices while meeting scheduled production expectations
  • Coordinates scheduling process to optimize production.
  • Ensures compliance of the plant's quality control programs to meet all bakery food safety/quality objectives including process reliability, product quality, product standards, specifications, and consumer complaint reductions.
  • Provides guidance, support, and coaching assistance as appropriate to all employees and interacts with support functions to maximize the plant's effectiveness.
  • Coordinates activities and project introductions with Corporate Innovation team.
  • Monitors operations, evaluates operational efficiencies, and corrects problems on a timely basis. Makes quality decisions and informs Plant Manager, other Staff members, and all direct reports to ensure their ability to effectively perform their job functions.
  • Drives continuous improvement in all aspects of the operation with a focus on safety, food safety, and Lean manufacturing criteria.
  • Keeps the line management team on target with the needs of the plant and communicates as necessary regarding any equipment failures, employee disciplines, and schedule changes.
  • Analyzes and recommends improvements or modifications including capital expenditures to upgrade and improve the overall plant operation in terms of cost, efficiencies, quality, safety, and sanitation.
  • Participates in the development of the long range business plan and ensures implementation through the Production Supervisors, Team Leads, and all hourly associates.
  • Develops and maintains key results and performance standards and conducts timely performance evaluations.
  • Monitors the training and development of Production Supervisors to ensure their ability to perform effectively and improve their management skills. Handles evaluations and merit increases for the direct reports.
  • Prepares reports and records as necessary to document departmental activities and/or provide information to other management personnel.
  • Ensures that disciplinary procedures are handled in a consistent manner according to company policies.
  • Assists in identifying and defining issues affecting performance and recommends corrective action plans. Responsible for accurate forecasting expenditures and meeting budgetary requirements.
  • Assumes Plant Manager and/or Engineering Facilities Manager responsibilities as needed.

  • Bachelor's Degree in a Business discipline or equivalent work experience. In depth knowledge of food processing, packaging, quality and safety standards.
  • Experience managing union and non-union employees
  • Strong coaching and mentoring skills
  • Three years of plant operations management experience in a manufacturing environment including both hourly and salaried personnel.
  • Dedication to ensuring employee safety
  • Knowledge of LEAN and Continuous Improvement strategies
  • Strong leadership ability and decision-making skills
  • Dedication to keep facility audit ready at all times
  • Must have the ability to work extended hours (including weekends) as this position requires 24-hour responsibility for the operations of the plant
  • Ability to use common sense and analytical skills to drive out costs and waste
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Computer skills with Microsoft Office including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
  • Experience with SAP, Maintenance Management Systems, and employee timekeeping systems preferred
