A Day in the Life

The Cradle to Grave Surgical Instruments Product Manager will support the development and execution of marketing strategies for the portfolio. They will act as a liaison between all Global Regions in building and executing the global surgical instruments strategy in both downstream and upstream activities. The Surgical Instruments Product Manager will be a catalyst for global portfolio expansion and responsible for collaboration with other functions to ensure successful strategic planning and execution of the portfolio strategy.

The downstream responsibilities will include leading marketing plans for the surgical instruments portfolio to achieving revenue, profit, and market share targets. The upstream responsibilities will include developing and leading the global surgical instruments strategy through collaboration with other cross functional teams to drive rationalization, cost savings, and deliver a healthy POI of new potential programs to drive future growth. This includes key customer engagement, new opportunity identification, business case development, detailed financial analytics, and alignment to global portfolio strategy and team leadership.

This position reports to the Senior Marketing Manager, Access and Instruments.

Key Responsibilities:


  • Develop strategies and execute marketing plans and programs, both short-and long-term, to ensure the profitable growth and market share of the stapling portfolio.
  • Lead upstream marketing activities for assigned product category.
  • Manage a diverse portfolio including product prioritization and rationalization. Drives product and procedural adoption in collaboration with worldwide markets.
  • Identify new product opportunities, create business plans, prioritize verses other opportunities, and drive alignment across the organization.
  • Perform detailed financial analysis for opportunity assessment and scenario modeling.
  • Represent marketing during the Product Development Process and being a key contributor and member on the core team by providing relevant customer and sales feedback to ensure that all products meet global customer needs and that all marketing deliverables are executed in a timely fashion.
  • Lead product launch process in close collaboration with R&D, the core team and Downstream Marketing.
  • Be the expert on assigned product category, including market and competitive trends.
  • Collaborate with global colleagues and stakeholders to identify new and existing product opportunities, as well as potential barriers to adoption.
  • Provide recommendations on where to invest, including clinical evidence generation and market development.
  • Identify new regional market opportunities and create relevant project proposals.
  • Develop promotional strategies, sales support materials, educational aids, etc. to grow market share to ensure sales excellence.
  • Create and present annual business plans.
  • Lead market research to understand areas for current and future investment and market potential.
  • Spend significant time in the field (20-30%) with sales personnel, customers and industry conferences to understand stakeholder needs, technology trends, competitive landscape, and to stay at the forefront of market dynamics and trends.
  • Develop and implement programs, including advisory meetings, to facilitate meaningful and productive relationships with Key Customers and gain product insights.
  • Work as a regional ambassador to help one or more global regions achieve their financial targets by supporting sales campaigns, surgeon visits, and in-region visits.
  • Comply with applicable FDA and international regulatory laws/standards and the Medtronic Code of Conduct.
  • Develop new go to market strategies via digital pathways to assist in selling surgical instrument post COVID.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements: Must Have


  • Bachelors degree required
  • Minimum of 4 years of marketing experience within the medical device field with experience in strategic product development and planning or an advanced degree with a minimum of 2 years of experience

  • Successful commercial launch of a product line with sustained market growth preferred.
  • Ability to travel 20-30% of the time
