Facilities Maintenance Supervisor at United Natural Foods Inc

Job Description:

Purpose

 

The Hopkins, MN Distribution Center is a large, multi-building, high volume, distribution center supplying grocery, frozen and fresh products to both Company owned and independently owned retail stores.  This unionized DC has over 800 employees including warehouse operations, transportation, maintenance, and support.  The target position is responsible to plan and direct the work of the facility maintenance staff and has responsibility for maintaining the (five) Regional and Distribution Center buildings, grounds and related equipment in a safe, clean, reliable condition that will effectively support and serve the 90 acres (1.9 million square feet) of the Hopkins, MN operation.  This position requires a hands-on working supervisor.


 
Job Responsibilities and Accountabilities:


  • The incumbent works independently with a minimal amount of direct supervision and leads a staff up to 60 employees involved in various aspects of facility maintenance, Electro-Mechanical maintenance, Sanitation, and Forklift Maintenance.

  • Plans and assigns specific work to maintenance mechanics and support personnel for all shifts.  Prioritizes and schedules maintenance of equipment and activities based on PM schedule and /or production needs.

  • As needed, plans, schedules, and directs third party contractor’s activity while ensuring the least disruption possible to the facility.

  • Ensures on a daily basis that all personnel adhere to all safety, security, sanitation, and pest control codes, laws and policies.

  • Responsible for employee relations including training, administering policies and procedures, communications, disciplinary action and ensuring union contract is properly administered.

  • Coordinates with Human Resources regarding staffing needs.

  • Works closely with Risk Control Manager to drive a culture of safety, including safety committees, observations, employee engagement, and positive employee relationships. 

  • Coordinates snow removal operations.

  • Monitors the maintenance and proper operation of all security, ammonia refrigeration, fire suppression and life safety systems to ensure proper operation of that equipment. 

  • Responds to after-hours phone calls as needed related to all assigned systems.

  • Assists the Facilities Maintenance Manager in preparing the operating and capital budgets for the buildings and related equipment.  Monitors expense control of facility maintenance supplies and equipment purchasing.

  • Researches and implements new maintenance methods, systems and products that can increase reliability, performance, efficiency and/or cost savings.

  • Completes all other related activities and special assignments as directed by the Facilities Maintenance Manager in a timely and efficient manner.

 
Job Requirements

Relevant Experience, Education, Certification, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities


  • Five plus years of experience in facility maintenance or equivalent essential.

  • Previous experience in a supervisory role required.

  • Must have working knowledge of government regulations pertaining to warehouse operations, food safety, and sanitation as required by OSHA, EPA and FDA.

  • Possess good leadership skills and the ability to supervise the work of others.  Must be able to motivate and work with and through others to achieve desired results.

  • Previous experience working with collective bargaining agreements and unionized workforce preferred. 

  • Possess good communication skills, both written and verbal.

  • Basic computer skills required and personal computer experience, with work processing and spreadsheet applications and computerized maintenance and parts inventory systems a plus.

  • Ability to handle multiple large projects and programs concurrently.

  • Experience with HVAC, boilers, commercial refrigeration, and fire protection systems required.

  • Knowledge of building codes, methods, state and local codes required.

  • Must have a valid driver’s license.

Physical Environment


  • This position requires a hands-on working supervisor.  During the workday the incumbent will be moving about the Distribution Center warehouse floor and work areas on multiple levels. Mobility required throughout the facility including stairs.

  • Potential hazards exist in regard to machinery such as forklifts, pallet jacks, mechanized systems, movement of tractors and trailers, etc. 

  • Temperatures in the work environment may vary between –20 to 90 degrees. 

  • Incumbent will use calculators, telephone, computers, and other office equipment in the course of the workday.
