We are seeking a full-time User Experience Designer 1 for our Area 51 team at our world headquarters in Olathe, Kansas. Area 51 is a fast-paced  innovation team focused on bringing new technology, revenue and markets into Garmin's core business segments of Automotive, Aviation, Fitness, Marine and Outdoor. Our small, diverse group of engineers and designers collaborate globally on a variety of technologies to create superior products and services. In this role, you will be responsible for applying user-centered design principals to create features for products and services reaching a variety of markets as well as working closely with a diverse group of software and hardware engineers and product managers. Other essential functions include: 

• Research, design and prototype user experiences for new features and products.
• Mobile app design for iOS and Android, especially for app to device interaction.
• Communicate research and present designs using flows, mockups, prototypes.
• Produce creative, simple and highly usable solutions for how products interact in response to human behavior.
• Be highly proactive, communicate and collaborate with internal and external teams, then work diligently to produce superior solutions.
• Judicious project prioritization leading to proper time management across several initiatives at once. 
• Assist with user interface testing and conduct usability tests to get feedback on new designs.
• Maintain and ensure user interface design and behavioral consistency across products.
• Stay abreast with new prototyping, presentation and graphic techniques and software.
• Keep a pulse on competitive products in market as well as emerging technologies.
• Clearly provide progress and status to the team and supervisor.

Qualified candidates possess a Bachelor’s Degree in Interactive Design, Human Factors, Visual Design or a degree with an equivalent curriculum that teaches user centered design principles with a cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.0 and the ability to effectively apply learned knowledge. Other requirements include:  

• Demonstrates proficiency and exceptional skills in design software to create prototypes or mock-ups using industry standard tools such as Sketch.
• Demonstrates excellent presentation, communication and organizational skills.
• Demonstrates understanding and knowledge of good user interface design (consistency, simplicity, usability)


Additional passion and experience in iconography, illustration, motion graphics, or photo editing is highly preferred. Bonus points for experience collaborating with or art directing GFX, VFX and SFX.
