About the Department
The Violence, Law, and Politics Lab is a research group at the University of Chicago Division of Social Sciences devoted to studying how politics affect cities and neighborhoods. Both interdisciplinary and multi-method in nature, the VLP Lab is conducting multi-city projects on historic homicide patterns and redistricting. Our research aims for structural and institutional transformation through greater accountability, transparency, and democratic governance.We are hiring a research assistant for work relating to redistricting, spatial analysis, and homicide. This project is exploring spatial temporal patterns in homicide across several US cities

Job Summary
The job provides technical support activities related to scientific research projects. Ensures compliance of research activities with institutional, state, and federal regulatory policies, procedures, directives and mandates. Assists in drafting presentations on research findings.

Responsibilities
- Data exploration and management
- Creating data visualizations with ggplot in R Studio
- Georeferencing maps and geocoding datasets
- Conducting archival research
- Performing sequence analyses
- Writing reports of findings
- Managing lab website
- Assists with the installation, sets up and performs experiments; interacting with students and other laboratory staff under the direction of the principal investigator.
- May assist recruiting and scheduling research subjects; assisting with developing or amending study protocols; assisting with developing data collection tools; assisting with building databases; and providing general administrative support. Is developing skills in research techniques or methods, regulatory policies and procedures, and relevant scientific field.
- Performs other related work as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:Minimum requirements include vocational training, apprenticeships or the equivalent experience in related field (not typically required to have a four-year degree).

Preferred Qualifications

Education:
- Bachelor's degree in sociology, statistics, or other related social sciences.

Experience:
- At least six months experience as a research assistant
- Software programs like R, Stata, and ArcGIS
- Regression modeling, sequence analysis, spatial clustering analysis, time series analysis, or quasi experimental models such as regression discontinuity or interrupted time series
- Writing social scientific papers (methods sections, producing publication caliber graphs and maps, results sections)
