Job Description:

The Assistant Director of Camp Crimson and Transfer Programs is responsible for fostering a commitment to student success by actively developing, implementing, and maintaining programs and services that enrich student learning, build and maintain a strong sense of community and support the social and personal development of students at the University of Oklahoma.

The position provides leadership, administration, and programming for Camp Crimson, Transfer Programs and the Transfer Leadership Class including: graduate assistant/student staff supervision, on and off campus relationships and interactions regarding Camp Crimson execution of events, planning and execution of the Camp Crimson reunion and persistence events, hiring and training of student staff, assisting in selection of transfer scholarship award recipients, overseeing and managing schedule for Transfer Leadership Class, and developing Transfer Programs schedule and events. Additionally, this role will manage a program budget and support sponsorship efforts.

In order to provide a common experience for all incoming students, the Camp Crimson experience will be reimagined for Fall 2021. This new experience will serve approximately 4,500 incoming students immediately prior to the start of class in August. The Assistant Director will help create an experience for all incoming students that will assist them in building relationships to foster leadership, personal growth, and meaningful engagement with faculty and advisers, to make connections with campus resources, and to become involved as active leaders in campus life.

Duties:


  • Design, implement, manage Camp Crimson: In collaboration with campus and community stakeholders, design a week-long orientation experience for all incoming students, including international and transfer students. This includes coordinating programs, logistics, and student leader training as well as all efforts during Camp Crimson.

  • Student staff recruitment, hiring, training: This position will recruit, hire, train 2-3 graduate assistants and oversee the recruitment, hiring, and training of over 500 student orientation staff and leaders.

  • Assessment: Develop an assessment for each key stakeholder of Camp Crimson including new student participants, student leaders, campus and community stakeholders. Collect and analyze the results to make future improvements.

  • Marketing: Develop and execute a marketing plan to introduce students to the Camp Crimson experience and ensure they are prepared to participate in the experience.

  • Liaison: Collaborate with on and off campus stakeholders to develop programming content for Camp Crimson and student staff training.

  • Assist with program delivery: New Student Programs is comprised of several different orientation programs. This position will assist in the execution of other programs within the department, including NSO and Start Sooner.

Required Education: Bachelor Degree or equivalent combination of education/job related experience, AND:


  • 18 - 36 Months of student advising or programming experience

Skills:


  • Knowledge of student development theory

  • Thorough knowledge of undergraduate orientation and transition programs

  • Knowledge of or ability to learn university and department principles and procedures involved in risk

  • A high level of personal and professional integrity

  • A commitment to and respect of the sensitivity of students' disabilities, health concerns, socioeconomic status, immigration and citizenship status, through actions and interactions

  • Ability to demonstrate multicultural competence, knowledge and experience working and interacting effectively with diverse groups of staff, faculty, and student populations

  • Ability to prioritize, exercise initiative, and demonstrate sound judgment, while effectively executing numerous tasks in a high-pressure, fast-paced environment

  • Skills in active listening, critical thinking, negotiation, problem solving, reasoning, organizing, written and verbal communication, and multitasking

  • Supervisory skills such as hiring, training, and providing feedback to student staff

  • Ability to work collaboratively with internal and external constituencies

  • Ability to present and facilitate workshops, programs, and events

Certifications:


  • Drivers license

Advertised Physical Requirements:


  • Frequent exposure to pressure caused by deadlines and busy periods

  • May be required to work irregular hours (outside of normal business hours) due to student programs and events

  • Ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies

Departmental Preferences:


  • Master's degree in student affairs, higher education, counseling, or a related field and/or equivalent experience/training

  • Experience with extended orientation programs (camps, welcome weeks, etc)

  • Experience planning and executing large campus events

  • Experience hiring, training, supervising student staff

Supervision: 1-5 Staff
