DESCRIPTION

The UCSB Migration Initiative and the Department of Sociology are pleased to invite applicants for a Postdoctoral Scholar to support the Mellon Sawyer Seminar, scheduled for the 2021-2022 academic year at UC Santa Barbara. In September 2020, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation generously funded the Sawyer Seminar proposal entitled, Race, Precarity, and Privilege: Migration in a Global Context, led by Professors France Winddance Twine (Sociology), Jean Beaman (Sociology), John S.W. Park (Asian American Studies), Kim Yasuda (Art), and Lisa Parks (Film and Media Studies). These scholars will collaborate over a year-long program that will bring together an interdisciplinary group of scholars from across our campus and from around the world. They will consider how post-colonial legacies have shaped migration, citizenship, and racial identities across three important sites, in California, South Korea, and France. They will host campus-wide events to help us understand resurgent patterns of nativism and white supremacy, as we examine how migrants from around the world have transformed these places over the last five decades.

The Post-Doctoral Scholar will be appointed in the Division of Social Science but will work with an interdisciplinary team across the Social Sciences and the Humanities. We seek an applicant with broad training in the humanistic social sciences, with special research emphases on issues of race, racism, and global migration. We seek applicants with innovative, critical, and interdisciplinary approaches to migration studies as the Scholar supports the Sawyer Seminar, the Scholar will also advance her own research agendas. We would also welcome scholars with an interest in film and media studies or in the visual arts. The Director of the UCSB Migration Initiative will supervise the Post-Doctoral Scholar during the academic year, and the Post-Doctoral Scholar will be expected to coordinate and participate in all planning meetings and events for Sawyer Seminars starting in Fall 2021 through the end of Spring 2022. The Post-Doctoral Scholar will play a central role in the collection and production of materials related to the Mellon Sawyer Seminar. The Scholar will learn how to prepare and publish scholarly work for publications and multimedia products that will appear on our website, in podcasts, and across various social media platforms. The Scholar will also have opportunities to develop their own research agenda as it relates to migration studies.
