Overview

The Level I Hazardous Compounding Infusion Pharmacy Technician is responsible for providing technical support to pharmacy operations under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist. The Level I technician will staff in all pharmacy locations areas as required. The technician s duties include but are not limited to: compounding hazardous and non-hazardous medications, batch compounding of pharmaceutical products, inventory management, medication tracking, compliance with regulatory standards, utilizing the various equipment and technology available in the pharmacy, and performing various quality control tasks as assigned. The Level I pharmacy technician is responsible for participating in staff development, such as the training and orientation processes of new pharmacy employees in any pharmacy workspace as assigned.

Requirements

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The specialized duties and responsibilities below are specific to the Hazardous Compounding Level I Pharmacy Technician role. General pharmacy related responsibilities are outlined in section 2.

* Medication Compounding

A level I pharmacy technician will perform the following medication compounding related duties on a regular basis. This list is not exhaustive, but outlines the basic responsibilities of the job.

* Prepare and compound low and medium risk, hazardous and non-hazardous chemotherapy and biotherapy commercial medications while adhering to guidelines for aseptic technique.

* Prepare and compound low and medium risk hazardous and non-hazardous investigational chemotherapy and biotherapy medications, including phase I trial preparations.

* Compound batches of sterile and non-sterile product for use as premedication and treatment for patient specific and bulk pharmacy dispenses.

* Compound non-sterile, hazardous and non-hazardous commercial and investigational medication products.

* Maintain a clean and organized workspace in compliance with USP regulations.

* Maintain biological safety cabinet cleanliness in accordance with USP regulations.

* Demonstrate proper aseptic technique.

* Demonstrate proficiency, accuracy, and efficiency when preparing medications orders.

* Demonstrate appropriate handling of hazardous and non-hazardous drug waste.

* Adhere to all product scanning and safety requirements as indicated by policy.

* Pharmacy Support Services

A level I pharmacy technician will assist with general pharmacy services outside of the compounding role. These are summarized below, however this list is not exhaustive and the technician is expected to perform all duties as assigned.

* Accurately and efficiently process and set up medication orders on a per patient basis for compounding in the clean room.

* Accurately and efficiently package and deliver medications to patient care areas, including but not limited to the automated dispensing systems (ADS) and pharmacy work spaces.

* Demonstrate competency and efficiency in the sorting, receiving, and delivery of medications.

* Demonstrate proficiency in working with the medication delivery systems (SVC, dumbwaiter, PEVCO etc.)

* Utilize all appropriate scanning and tracking systems within the pharmacy department.

* Identify and escalate concerns related to pharmacy workflows and processes to the supervisor and/or manager.

* Participate in the training and orientation of new staff members in any area, as assigned.

* Adhere to guidelines and policies regarding cleaning the pharmacy spaces, including the biological safety cabinet, the clean rooms, processing areas, medication storage areas, floors, fridges and other spaces as assigned.

* Maintain all required regulatory logs and documentation as directed by pharmacy policy and procedure.

* Perform other duties and tasks as assigned by the covering technician, pharmacist, or supervisor.

* Leadership

* Demonstrate an understanding of the department values and goals, and exhibit them in daily work practices.

* Special Skills

* Staff member must be comfortable working with pharmaceutical calculations.

* Staff member must be comfortable working with basic technology systems.

* Able to develop proficiency and mastery of aseptic technique, and the compounding of sterile products.

The general pharmacy related duties and responsibilities as outlined below apply to all pharmacy technician staff members working in any DFCI authorized pharmacy locations

* Use of Pharmacy Technology

The level I pharmacy technician must demonstrate proficiency in the use of the various technologies employed by the pharmacy department. Examples of such technology include but are not limited to: EPIC, RxScan, Peoplesoft, Simplifi797, and Veriform.

* Demonstrate proficiency and mastery of the various technologies used in the pharmacy department such as EPIC, RxScan, Peoplesoft, Simplifi797, Veriform, Medselect, and any other interface being used.

* Demonstrate the ability to independently troubleshoot basic technology related issues and assist in the resolution or escalate to the appropriate resource.

* Medication Inventory Management

In coordination with the Materials Management department, the pharmacy technician will participate in the following tasks to improve the pharmacy workflow.

* Follow current safety standards and guidelines to ensure optimal medication storage and minimize medication errors.

* Adhere to all look-alike/sound-alike documentation to avoid storage hazards.

* Maintain appropriate drug storage conditions such as cleanliness and temperature, and rotate stock appropriately to manage expiring product.

* Perform daily inventory management tasks such as cycle counting, PAR level assessment, medication stocking, and the removal of soon to be expired product.

* For satellite locations, the pharmacy technician will be responsible for the ordering and receiving of medication per procedure established by the materials management department.

* Adult and Pediatrics Satellites

The level I pharmacy technician will be responsible for additional duties at the satellite locations, including but not limited to:

* Receiving and ordering of medications.

* Daily, weekly, and monthly cleaning of the pharmacy workspaces.

* Restock nursing stations

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

The level I pharmacy technician must fully adhere to all department standards. Staff are required to treat all others (fellow pharmacy staff, patients, nurses, providers, support personnel, etc.) with the utmost respect. Staff must adhere to department and institute guidelines regarding punctuality and dependability. Staff will be held to the standard set by policy and procedure regarding time off approval, absences, tardiness, and professionalism. The Pharmacy Department at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute places emphasis on the values of reliability, professionalism, cooperation, teamwork, communication, positivity and inclusiveness. Staff are expected to be team focused employees, and are required to participate in department meetings and functions to promote a successful and efficient pharmacy workgroup.

The level I pharmacy technician is held accountable by completing annual competencies, performance evaluations, and other pharmacy related assessments and courses as assigned. The technician must have a registration and certification that is current and in good standing with the board of pharmacy.
