The Nursing Assistant has the knowledge and ability to assist in the delivery of patient care as delegated by a registered professional nurse. Able to provide appropriate care to patients regardless of age, showing sensitivity toward individual needs. Willing to accept responsibility for individual job requirements and performance, able to contribute to effective unit operations.

RESPONSIBILITIES

* 1. Assists the nurse in providing care to patients.

* 1.1 Provides direct physical patient care following the accepted procedures and in accordance with the nursing assistant's skills.

* 2. Provides direct patient care as necessary following the accepted procedures and in accordance with the Medical Assistant skills. including but not limited to: vital signs, phlebotomy, assisting patients on and off stretchers and beds.

* 9. Answers the telephone professionally.

* 9.1 Answers the phone promptly following department guidelines; introduces self and department, and as appropriate, offers assistance. Uses a pleasant tone of voice.

* 10. Maintains a clean and safe environment.

* 10.1 Keeps work area safe and clean; keeps hallways clear.

* 11. Anticipates what services and information people need and takes action to provide it.

* 11.1 Watches for clues that patients or visitors require assistance. Asks, 'May I help you?' Escorts them to their destination, if necessary. Encourages people to ask questions.

* 12. Must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on his or her assigned unit. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his or her age specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the unit's/area's/ department's policies and procedures

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION

A minimum of a high school diploma or GED; and CNA, PCT, or other educational equivalent, i.e. Medical Assistant, Phlebotomy Technician, Student Nurse who has completed one semester of clinical experience.

EXPERIENCE

English speaking, basic mathematics and computer skills and knowledge of basic patient care.

SPECIAL SKILLS

Ability to read, write, basic computer skills and understand the English language; ability to perform basic mathematics; ability to carry out directions; must possess a mature, sympathetic and caring attitude with the ability to be sensitive to the varied needs of the GH patient population; must be flexible, cooperative, and able to meet the demands of the NA position using appropriate communication techniques; must pass the Greenwich Hospital Competency Program before providing patient care independently.

PHYSICAL DEMAND

May be exposure to infectious diseases. Moderate stress and risk of injury from patient care. Standing/walking for more than half of the day. Must be able to assist in pushing/pulling/lifting patients ranging from 5 to 300 pounds.
