Overview
Perform laboratory procedures and investigative work as part of ongoing research projects. Perform a variety of investigative and technical procedures heavy in immunology and molecular biology; Collect, verify and record data; compile information in support of laboratory research. Apply knowledge and skills as applicable. Must be willing to learn and work with mice as a model system of infection.

PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES: The primary job responsibilities and accountabilities listed below represent work performed by this position and are not all-inclusive. The omission of a specific accountability will not preclude it from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical extension of the position.

- Perform general laboratory procedures: perform DNA extractions and/or PCR-based experiments, perform mouse colony management and assist with animal procedures following animal protocols and ensuring regulatory compliance; maintain bacterial and/or eukaryotic cultures; operate relevant instruments and equipment after instruction; complete experiments in a timely manner following established protocols.
- Assist in data entry and statistical analysis, using appropriate analysis software, and report results to lab members and/or Principal Investigator; organize data; perform calculations; and maintain lab notebooks.
- Perform lab support activities which may include the following: mouse colony management; preparation and maintenance of laboratory reagents, chemicals, instruments, and equipment; maintain general cleanliness and order of the lab; order chemicals, reagents and other supplies.
Requirements
Required Education/Experience:
- Bachelor's Degree in an appropriate field of science or technology OR college-level coursework in biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, microbiology, or in a related science curriculum AND equivalent lab experience.

Preferred:
- At least two (2) years experience in a laboratory/research setting (undergraduate research experience included).
- Data entry and/or word processing experience
- Previous experience with techniques in molecular biology and immunology, especially gDNA extraction and/or PCR.
- Research experience with epithelial/sterile cell culture techniques helpful.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Must be willing to work with mice as a model system for infection
- Knowledge of basic principles of media preparation and sterile techniques
- Knowledge of software applications, proficiency using MS Office (Outlook, Word, Excel & Access), and ability to learn new software programs
- Knowledge of DNA analysis software and related computer techniques
- Strong interpersonal skills
- Good laboratory techniques and record keeping skills
- Good organization skills, including attention to detail
- Data collection, analysis and summary skills
- Good written and communication skills
- Able to read English and follow both verbal and written instructions
- Able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of people from diverse backgrounds
- Willingness and ability to learn new methods, approaches, and experimental techniques
- Able to move around different work sites to perform job duties and to use specialized equipment
- Able to work with potentially hazardous chemical materials and biohazard samples
- Able to recognize emergency situations and take appropriate action as defined in emergency procedures
