Job Description:

Diagnostic Technologist

Who we are:

The Animal Health Diagnostic Center (AHDC) is an AAVLD accredited veterinary diagnostic laboratory located in Ithaca, NY within the College of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell University. We are committed to improving the health of all animals and the work we perform helps protect and improve public health, promote environmental stewardship, and foster economic growth.

What we do:

As one of the most comprehensive veterinary diagnostic laboratories in the country, we receive over 200,000 submissions and process close to one million specimens annually, using both state of the art technology and methodologies that are more traditional, across twelve disciplines.

What you will be doing:
- As a member of the Animal Health Diagnostic Center, you will work collaboratively across the organization in support of the mission while adhering to the AHDC Quality assurance system.
- Your home base will be within the section of Virology, where you will work as a diagnostic technologist performing a comprehensive range of microbiological tests on specimens to detect viral antigens, nucleic acid and/or antibodies made in response to infections or vaccinations.
- You will conduct various virus isolation and serological assays and prepare and maintain cell cultures, while meticulously documenting pertinent information.
- You will perform routine molecular diagnostic testing, extract and analyze DNA or RNA from samples such as blood, feces, tissues, milk, etc. quickly and accurately.
- You will also prepare, evaluate, and inventory media, conjugates, staining solutions, and other reagents.
- As a member of the Virology team, you will proactively keep the learning going and help promote a positive working environment!

What are the required qualifications?
- We are looking for a candidate with a bachelor degree in biology, microbiology, or a related science discipline with at least one year of experience working in a laboratory environment.
- The ideal candidate enjoys working in a laboratory performing routine testing with precision, accuracy, and efficiency.
- Basic computer skills are necessary, as you will be using various software programs to perform the job!
- It would be great if you have experience working within an established quality system, however we are willing to train if you are willing to learn.
- Similar to the field of human medicine, you will have access to confidential client information and must have the utmost discretion.

Other considerations:
- Working in the diagnostic laboratory is very rewarding, especially for those who thrive in a high through-put detail-oriented environment, enjoy learning new skills and trouble-shooting problems, are efficient and organized, work well under pressure in a team based environment, and find fulfillment in task completion.
- This is not a physically demanding job, but you must be able to sit for extended periods at lab benches, biosafety cabinets, and microscopes. This position also requires extensive pipetting, but we understand the importance of ergonomics and do our very best to reduce the potential for injury.
- We do require all employees receive a vaccination for rabies after they begin, which is paid for by the organization.
- This is a full-time position and the hours are Monday through Friday from 8:00am to 5:00pm. You may be required to work outside of the normal business hours, including occasional holidays, evenings, and weekends depending on the needs of the organization.
- This position is being posted as a three-year term position; however, reappointment is likely and will be based on both funding and performance.
- As a note Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
- Relocation assistance will not be provided for this position.
