Job Description:

Loads, unloads and transfers cargo from barges, warehouse, equipment, and customer vehicles to facilitate the shipment of freight to, from and within Alaska. Employee may be expected to travel to other locations.



Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following; other duties may be assigned

Attendance and timeliness are essential functions of this position.

 


  • Safety is Lynden's first responsibility to our employees and our customers.  This position is a safety-sensitive position and the ability to work in a constant state of alertness and safe manner.

  • Receive, load, unload, and transfer freight shipments to and from a variety of containers, trailers, trucks, and non-commerical vehicles using forklift or by hand within or in the vicinity of CFS warehouse facility, surrounding yard, and/or Alaska Marine Lines barge landing.

  • Operate forklifts with lifting capacity between 3,000# and 8,000# to move freight between equipment, warehouse, and yard locations.

  • Consolidate customer shipments as efficiently as possible by destination port, temperature, size, and other variables as required; secures shipments wihtin or on a variety of equipment with the use of metal banding, dunnage, lumber, binders, and/or chains; ensures proper securement and blocking to prevent cargo damage.

  • Ensure proper positioning and securement of freight according to federal regulations governing the shipment and storage of hazardous materials.

  • Attendance and timeliness are essential functions of this position.

  • Able to work flexible hours and travel.

  • Operate up to 100,000# capacity forklifts to move empty or fully loaded containers, platforms or other freight and equipment, to or from trucks, barges, and yard.

  • Operate a variety of machinery in the course of loading various types of equipment and barges; drives all types of passenger and other type vehicles in order to load and unload from containers and flats.

  • Secure shipments (to avoid movement) within or on different types of equipment using a variety of banding, dunnage, lumber, binders or chains.  Ensure proper securement to prevent damage.

  • Load containers and platforms and transfer to the barge with sorting and stowing by port, hazardous material classification requirements, weight and size in a safe and efficient manner.

  • Count and inspect freight and compare to paperwork. Label and mark freight to ensure proper information is recorded for the shipment.

  • Handle line for barge tie-ups.

  • Depending on location, may handle phone calls or inquiries from customers and prepare rates or documentation on shipments.

  • Ensure compliance with all federal, state, local regulations as well as company policy and standards. 


Qualifications

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

Education and/or Experience:

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); plus one to two years tractor-trailer driving and/or forklift operator experience or equivalent combination of education or experience (or as determined by Service Center Manager).  Knowledge of current customers, requirements and processes is helpful.

 

Certificates and Licenses:

Possession of valid class “A” Commercial Driver’s License with hazardous material endorsement in addition to an acceptable driving record is preferred. 

 

TWIC card required.

 

Forklift certification for operating fork trucks with lifting capacities between 3,000# and 100,000#.

 

Language Skills:

Ability to read and speak the English language sufficiently to converse with co-workers, supervisors and managers, to understand procedures and warning signs and or markings in the English language, to respond to inquiries, and to make entries on reports and records.

 

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating instructions, and procedure manuals and shipping documents;  ability to write routine reports and correspondence;  ability to communicate effectively with other employees and customers.

 

Mathematical Skills:

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide two digit numbers.

 

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to understand detailed written and oral instructions; ability to prioritize and problem solve in time/safety-sensitive situations.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear while communicating with customers and co-workers in person or via telephone or radio. 

 

Employee must be able to sit, stand or walk for extended periods.  Employee is frequently required to use hands, fingers and arms to steer and operate controls while lifting, transporting, moving or securing freight and is occasionally required to kneel, stoop or crouch to examine equipment and cargo.

 

The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

 

REQUIRED PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT (PPE):

Employee is required to wear PPE as outlined in Company’s Industrial Health and Safety Manual Chapter 2.27 PPE Program, which may include hard hat, safety toe shoes/boots, gloves, safety glasses/goggles, hearing protection, respiratory protection and arctic gear.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and in outside weather conditions and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, extreme cold, and extreme heat.

 

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, however hearing protection may be required.
