At CoBank, our Senior Income Tax Accountant prepares and reviews federal, state, excise and local tax returns and reports.  Prepares complex tax accounting analyses, and provides tax accounting support.  Delivers technical support and develops applications servicing CoBank / Farm Credit Leasing (FCL) operations.  Provides analytical, research, transaction structure, communications and other support to Relationship Managers, closing teams and other associates regarding lease portfolio.  Assists with federal and state income/franchise tax audits and sales/property tax audits.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:



  • Prepares and reviews the interim period and annual ASC 740 income tax provision calculation.  Works with Financial Reporting to ensure the interim, annual and regulatory financial statements include accurate and complete information and disclosures. 

  • Works with external auditors and regulators to ensure all tax related processes, calculations and disclosures are accurate and complete.  

  • Prepares and reviews all Federal and state income and gross receipts tax returns, including all quarterly estimates and extension payments, as needed.  Ensures the accuracy and completeness of supporting work papers and base information used in the compliance process.  Assists or leads Federal and state income or gross receipt audits, as needed.

  • Provides sales and use and property tax compliance support to other Tax Department areas as needed, ensuring taxes are properly applied, collected on the portfolio and remitted to tax jurisdictions.  Provides support in managing jurisdictional audits, and responding to internal and external inquiries.

  • Identifies and recommends opportunities to implement and support new processes, or revise existing processes, to maximize accuracy and efficiency in support of new business initiatives, changes in tax law or tax planning positions.

  • Researches complicated tax matters, and stays up-to-date on changes in tax laws, especially laws related to cooperative taxation and leasing.  Informs and educates financial management of changes in tax laws affecting CoBank.  Answers questions on tax law from customers, sales, lease operations, etc., and researches areas of law that are advantageous to CoBank.

  • Interfaces with associates to ensure that tax information provided by other departments is delivered accurately and in timely manner. 

  • Assists in preparing technical correspondence and memoranda required by management, the Internal Revenue Service, external auditors, and regulatory agencies.

  • Assists in providing technical support to lease operations regarding lease classification and structuring matters, and issues regarding federal, state and local income, sales and property tax.

  • Maintains specialized databases to support compliance and servicing processes


Basic Qualifications



  • Bachelor's degree in relevant discipline.

  • Five (5) or more years of relevant experience, preferably in a Big 4 public accounting firm or a large corporate tax department; or an appropriate combination of education and experience.  


Preferred Qualifications



  • Master's degree and/or Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license preferred.

  • Strong knowledge of ASC 740, Income Tax Accounting, SEC financial reporting procedures, Federal and state income tax laws, tax research tools, leasing industry, state sales and property tax laws and regulations.

  • Proven ability to review and complete Federal and state corporate income tax returns, partnership returns, sales tax returns and personal property tax returns.

  • Understanding of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), leasing and financial institution accounting and reporting practices, and regulatory reporting requirements.

  • Excellent organizational and time management skills, with the ability to manage and schedule workload and projects in order to navigate peaks, prioritize competing commitments, and complete assignments in accordance with established deadlines. 

  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team environment.

  • Strong attention to detail and customer service orientation.

  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively and build relationships with associates and management at all levels of the bank.

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Word, PowerPoint and Excel); tax research and return preparation tools and interactive data visualization and management software

  • Experience in banking or financial services preferred.
