Overview

The Data Lifecycle and Scalable Workflows Group at Oak Ridge National Laboratory is seeking a highly motivated senior scientist in the area of health and biomedical science and engineering. With the accelerating use of large-scale computing and AI for health, healthcare, and genotype-to-phenotype linkages, complex workflow and data management is a growing need. Prospective candidates will define and help orchestrate large-scale discovery-science campaigns.

Specific areas of research interest include:
* Domain-science-informed data science, with emphasis on biomedical science and technology, computational genomics, and clinical/healthcare informatics.
* Applying large-scale analytics and AI to scientific missions in these domains.
* Data analytics pipelines from the Edge to Exascale to accommodate sensitive data protection and interoperability (e.g., using anonymized or deidentified data sets).
* Computational performance of AI/ML algorithms, including the ability to use modern computing hardware and software frameworks efficiently
This position is part of the Advanced Technologies Section within the National Center for Computational Sciences (NCCS) Division.
The Advanced Technologies Section offers scientific, technical, operational, and thought leadership by developing, hardening, and deploying solutions for compute and data intensive computing environments.

The NCCS provides state- of-the-art computational and data science infrastructure, coupled with dedicated technical and scientific professionals, to accelerate scientific discovery and engineering advances across a broad range of disciplines. NCCS hosts the Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility, one of DOE's National User Facilities. NCCS will deploy an exascale system in 2021.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

* Collaborate with internal and external researchers on a wide variety of AI/ML research and projects.
* Integrate and deploy research in AI/ML workflows and algorithms on high performance computing systems.
* Perform scaling and deployments of data science and machine learning algorithms with applications to domain sciences emphasizing health and associated informatics disciplines.
* Deliver toolkits and new capabilities that execute on ORNL's leading data infrastructures.
* Collaborate in authoring peer reviewed papers, technical papers, reports and proposals, and
* Maintain membership and leadership in professional, academic, and research organizations.
* Mentor early career research staff, postdocs and students.

Basic Qualifications

* Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a field closely related to the job duties of this position.
* 2+ years of research experience in any of the following; Bioinformatics, Computational Genomics, Clinical Informatics, Population Health Informatics or a closely related field.

Preferred Qualifications

* 6+ years of research experience outside of Ph.D.
* The ability to conduct independent and significant research.
* Position requires the ability to communicate effectively (both verbal and written).
* Experience in high-performance computing.
* Demonstrated programming ability, and knowledge of Java, Python, C/C++ or other commonly used language.
* Experience with machine learning/deep learning programming and application on biomedical data.
* Experience in natural language processing applications is desirable
* Experience with any data integration technologies
* Experience with core semantic technologies (RDF, OWL, SPARQL)
* Flexibility with regard to the research assignments is required.
* Ability to collaborate with scientists, engineers, and sponsors is also required.
* Capable of producing significant research results, publications, and funding proposals.
