Job Description Summary:

The Associate Director , Biology is responsible for planning and performing scientific experiments that contribute to PTC’s research and drug discovery activities.  The Associate Director is also responsible for communicating experimental results to his/her supervisor and the project team.

The incumbent works cross-functionally with internal departments, and external resources as appropriate, as part of PTC’s discovery science project teams. S/he also supports adherence to relevant regulatory requirements and company Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) as appropriate.

Primary duties/responsibilities:


  • Independently plans, initiates, directs and executes scientific research and experiments and interprets and communicates results as part of multi-disciplinary team(s). This includes performing analyses of primary research literature.


  • Maintains broad knowledge of state-of-the-art principles and theories related to human disease and/or drug discovery.


  • Contributes to the strategy and direction of successful drug discovery programs.


  • Presents findings internally and externally to cross-functional teams.


  • Participates in the development and writing of patent applications and identifies patentable inventions.


  • Abides by all safety and regulatory guidelines.


  • Maintains a detailed laboratory notebook.


  • Performs other tasks as assigned.



  • Contributes to general lab needs such as:



    • Equipment maintenance.


    • Capital equipment purchases.


    • Troubleshoot




KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES REQUIRED


  • Extensive experience in immunology research, familiar with both innate and adoptive immunity


  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of autoimmune and inflammatory disease pathophysiology


  • Extensive experience in developing and applying disease-relevant cellular models to evaluate compound effect and its therapeutic potential for the treatment autoimmune diseases, inflammatory diseases, and fibrosis


  • Data driven assessment of compound translatability from preclinic to clinic


  • Track record of consistent and successful drug discovery accomplishments (e.g., patent inventorship, conference presentations, and peer-reviewed publications)


* Minimum level of education and years of relevant work experience.

  • Ph.D. in Immunology with postdoctoral training, plus 10+ years’ relevant Academia/ Industry working experience  

* Special knowledge or skills needed and/or licenses or certificates required.


  • Works on unusually complex technical problem and provides solutions which are highly innovative.


  • Works under consultative direction toward predetermined long-range goals and objectives.  Assignments are often self-initiated.


  • Exercises independent judgment within defined procedures and practices.


  • Develops advanced technological ideas and guides their development into a final product.


  • Demonstrates technical proficiency, scientific creativity, collaboration with others and independent thought within a fast-paced, matrixed, team environment consisting of internal and external team members


  • Manage and mentor a team of scientists in fast paced matrix environment.


  • May oversee academic collaboration and/or be designated as a subcontractor or co-PI on research grants


  • Interviews and contributes to the evaluation of candidates.


  • Possesses detailed and expert knowledge of scientific principles and concepts.


  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a multi-disciplinary team environment.


  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office preferably MS Excel and MS PowerPoint or similar


  • Excellent verbal and written communication and skills.


  • Analytical thinker with excellent problem-solving skills.


  • Demonstrates an understanding of the strategic alignment of his/her work with corporate goal(s) and demonstrates the ability to adapt to changing priorities and deadlines.


  • Excellent planning, organization and time management skills including the ability to support and prioritize multiple projects.
