FUNCTION: Operates a major function of the mouse studies including colony maintenance, surgery, and radiology in a scientific laboratory.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
Assists the supervisor in the receipt of incoming animals including performing physical examinations, collecting biological materials for laboratory tests, administering medication, observing animals during a quantitative period, and documenting the record throughout the study period.
In case of animal illness or death, responds to sick report, obtains history, collects biological samples and assists in necropsies by exposing body cavities, dissecting tissue and recording findings.
Performs technical tasks in the operation of a major specialty area such as surgery.
Assists in the training of subordinate personnel.
Organizes the IACUC document and prepares for annual report and site visit.
Maintains colonies and obtains necessary number of mice for experiments.
Performs genotype in a timely fashion.
Assists the laboratory members in the preparation of samples generated from mouse study.
Analyzes the tissues generated from mouse study, documents the results, and performs statistical analysis.
Manages laboratory essential for the laboratory including ordering, tracking, communicating with vendor, and upkeep.
REQUIREMENTS:
Education: Associate’s degree in biology, biological science or closely related field
Experience: 24 months of laboratory animal experience
Equivalent/Substitution: Bachelor’s degree in biology or biological science or closely related field OR 48 months of laboratory animal facility experience will qualify an applicant
Skills:
Ability to effectively communicate, both orally and in writing
Great attention to detail
Experience working with animals in a lab setting
Preferences:
Bachelor's degree in biology or biological science, however not required
