The Nuclear Security and Isotope Technology Division (NSITD), Nuclear Science and Engineering Directorate, Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), is seeking candidates for an Isotope Production Technical Professional Position in the Nuclear & Radiochemistry Group (NRG).
Description
The Nuclear and Radiochemistry Group (NRG) within the Isotope & Fuel Cycle Technology Division (IFCTD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) has an immediate opening for an Isotope Production Technical Professional. We are seeking a highly motivated, highly organized and talented candidate to join our growing team to work on our expanding isotope production portfolio. Utilizing the unique capabilities at ORNL, including the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) and related radiochemical and nuclear processing facilities, the NRG supports a variety of projects supplying difficult to produce radioisotopes essential for medical and industrial applications. Production of these radioisotopes support the missions of the Department of Energy (DOE) and other government agencies, as well as the needs of private organizations and institutions. Our current focus is on production and processing research and development to stand up new production capabilities for medical and industrial radioisotopes, including Sr-89, Ba-133, Lu-177, W-188, Ac-227 and Th-229 at the ORNL High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR).
Major Duties/Responsibilities
- Lead and support isotope production activities in a team environment in radiological facilities including hot cell and glovebox production operations.
- Develop and coordinate production and processing schedules and liaise with isotope program staff in support of customer requests.
- Develop solutions to isotope processing and production challenges.
- Engage with experienced scientists, engineers and technicians to establish solutions to complex problems.
- Assist and develop quality control and quality assurance documentation as well as procedures in support of isotope production and operational excellence.
- Ensure compliance with environmental, safety, health and quality program requirement
- Assist with the coordination of the radioactive and hazardous waste disposal and management of the chemical inventory within the facility.
- Mentor and train technicians
Qualifications Required
- This position requires a minimum of a bachelor's degree or equivalent in physical or engineering sciences and 5 years relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of training, education, and experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Ability and hands-on experience with safe handling of highly radioactive samples and experience with glove box and/or remote hot cell operations.
- Experience in isotope production activities and chemical purification techniques.
- Experience in wet-chemistry operations and nuclear detection methods including gamma-ray spectroscopy is desirable.
- Experience in establishing quality assurance and quality control documentation.
- Excellent communication skills are essential to enable effective interaction with peers, technical and non-technical staff.
- Must be self-motivated, organized, have a commitment to safe work practices and have the ability to work in a team
