This position is responsible for: The Medical Assistant II provides assistance to providers in the offices.  This assistance includes but is not limited to data collection for patient intake, assisting with provider/patient needs during procedures and basic documentation of the encounter.  The Medical Assistant II is responsible for assisting with clerical activities related to appointment scheduling, patient intake including data verification and office communications.

This is a causal 8 hours a week job.

Essential Functions

1.Greets patients and families at the clinical setting according to Nemours Standards of Behavior.  Systematically checks families in and out (as applicable).

2.Performs and documents patient intake (height, weight, head circumference, blood pressure, vision and hearing screening, reason for visit, chief complaint) and appropriate for that specialty.

3.Performs phlebotomy, via venipuncture or capillary techniques to obtain blood specimens.  Transcribe, collect, label and arrange transport for lab specimens.  Performs point of care testing as appropriate.

4.Perform check-in and check- out process:


  •   Enters and/or verifies patient/guarantor demographic and insurance information.

  •   Schedules/cancels/reschedules patients appointments.  Appropriately statuses patient in computer system.

  •    Manages phone calls to/from patients, physician offices, insurance companies, internal customers, etc. utilizing

      proper telephone etiquette


  •  Collects payments from patients - including copayments, current charges and prior account balances, posts charges, provides receipts and documents all financial transactions, including charge entry at checkout. 

  • Prepares daily cash reconcilliation and bank deposits.

  • Ensures work queues are up to date.

5.Prepares patient rooms.

6.Prepares charts 3 days prior to scheduled appointment by requesting lab/xray and doctor’s notes.

7.Accepts assignments and travels to another location if needed to perform clinical duties.

8.Additional miscellaneous duties and responsibilities, as may be assigned from time to time by employee’s supervisor.

Non Essential Functions

1.  Performs appropriate Quality Control on lab equipment.  

2.  Monitor waiting room and keeps patient informed as to schedule delays.   Informs patients wait time more than 15 minutes and advised of progress.

3.  Checks status of patients waiting more than 10 minutes and advises of progress.

4.  Monitors and ensures patient safety and office cleanliness and security.

5.  Opens, sorts and routes mail, lab and consult reports.

6.  Participates in the departmental and system wide quality assessment and improvement activities.

7.  Informs patients wait time more than 15 minutes and advises of progress

Additional Requirements:

High School Diploma

Graduated from an accredited Medical Assistant Program

BLS from American Heart Association

Urgent Care/ED experience preferred

1-3 years of job related experience required

National Certification must be obtained within 6 months of employment.

Medical Assistant Certification:  acceptable certifications are Certified Medical Assistant (CMA), Registered Medical Assistant (RMA), National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA) and Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA).
