Purpose

The Manufacturing Science Division seeks to hire a research scientist to fill a role in the study of the interface of advanced manufacturing and sustainable energy. We are looking for a recognized expert in manufacturing science as applied to sustainable energy solutions with experience in one or more of the following areas: (1) advanced manufacturing, (2) renewable energy (wind, solar, hydro, bio/agricultural), and (3) other energy sources that have minimal Greenhouse Gas emissions (nuclear, renewable natural gas, biofuels). The research will be a mix of analysis and experimental methods to define barriers to sustainable energy commercialization and demonstrate advanced manufacturing approaches that will overcome those barriers to achieve the goals of energy security and sustainability while strengthening the nation's economic security.

The position is in the Manufacturing Science Division. However, you will collaborate with staff across ORNL where a broad base of science capabilities and expertise exists. You will serve as a technical communicator and interface with collaborating scientists at other national labs, industry, and universities as well as program sponsors. Representative activities include: research of barriers in manufacturing of sustainable energy solutions, developing strategies for defining and meeting long term goals relevant to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) programs, engaging collaborators and sponsors, developing R&D proposals, executing research projects with a diverse multi-disciplinary team, and publishing and transferring research outcomes in scientific journals and presentations to stakeholders.

Major Duties/Responsibilities
- Conduct research in manufacturing science as applied to sustainable energy solutions
- Present and report research results in high-impact peer reviewed journals, conferences and program reviews
- Work with other ORNL researchers to develop a long-term technical focus and strategy that leverages and aligns controls capabilities within the laboratory
- Write and coordinate the submission of research and development proposals that build upon programmatic themes in support of ORNL key mission areas
- Support other staff scientists in interactions with sponsors at DOE and other agencies and other key stakeholders in industry

Qualifications Required
- A M.S. or Ph.D. in Materials Science, Industrial Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or related disciplinewith a minimum of 5 years' post-degree experience
- A record of excellence in cross-disciplinary research related to energy and/or manufacturing
