DESCRIPTION
The Theater Arts Department at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for an Assistant Professor of Design with an emphasis on costume. The candidate will join the department at a pivotal moment: we are forging a collaboration with Art & Design: Games and Playable Media, which will position us at the cutting edge of digital performance and play, while also reimagining our curriculum to center anti-racist, intersectional feminist, and decolonial approaches. Applicants should be able to teach a range of courses including Introduction and Advanced Costume Design, Costume History and Construction, Introduction to Design (all areas), and Narrative Design. We have a preference for candidates with expertise in designing across varied platforms and disciplines. Possible related areas of research and teaching might include global design history and theory; digital and/or game design; costuming with sensitivity to ethnic and cultural representation; or trans-affirming, non-ableist, and body-positive design. . Prefer candidates with MFA or higher degree (or foreign equivalent) in Design with expectation degree will completed by September 2021 or equivalent professional experience.
The successful candidate will be expected to teach, mentor undergraduate and graduate students, contribute service to the department, Arts Division and university at large, and maintain a professional practice as research. The ability to contribute significantly to graduate education and the mentoring of graduate students is highly desirable. The successful candidate must be able to work with students, faculty and staff from a wide range of social and cultural backgrounds. We are especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community.
Given our department s focus on the work of decolonizing our teaching, research, and service, our first round of review will be solely based on (1) the research statement and (2) the statement of contributions to diversity, equity and inclusion. We welcome candidates who understand the barriers facing historically oppressed groups in higher education, and who have engaged in teaching, research, professional and/or public service contributions that promote diversity, equity, and inclusion. We are looking for candidates that demonstrate effective strategies that support the recruitment and success of underrepresented scholars and students, which may take a variety of forms. The rubric that we will use to evaluate the statement of contributions to diversity, equity and inclusion is available here: https://apo.ucsc.edu/policy/communications/docs/UCSCRubricsC2DEIStatements.pdf
