JOB SUMMARY:

The Emergency Medicine (EM) Director of Operations reports to the Vice President of Emergency and Hospitalist Services (VP) for the RWJBH system. The EM Director of Operations ensures that system emergency departments provide a safe and compassionate experience for our patients and their families as well as a supportive and productive emergency care environment for our providers and staff. The EM Director of Operations ensures that operational policies, procedures, and new initiatives across emergency departments are of high quality, consistently implemented and compliant with all operational regulations, policies and procedures. The EM Director of Operations possesses primary responsibility for operational and financial effectiveness and success of emergency care programs and their continued development and growth. They will support the VP and Emergency Department (ED) Nursing Directors in the development and maintenance of strategic planning initiatives and clinical integration throughout the system, and serve as a liaison to Site and System CNOs.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

* Operational Advisor/Supporter

* Provides support and leadership to ED Nursing Directors and management regarding all aspects of operations and patient care delivery. Implements and measures performance goals, long term objectives and strategy developed for emergency care departments.

* Workflow Efficiency

* Analyzes and ensures efficient workflow and develops and implements standardized improvements across sites. Monitors patient access, patient volumes and labor productivity. Makes adjustments to staffing levels, processes, or other resources to maximize revenue, minimize unnecessary cost and improve efficiency and effectiveness of the emergency care departments.

* Quality Improvement Initiatives

* In conjunction with nursing leadership, assist in the development of quality improvement initiatives that design, plan, measure, and improve emergency care functions and clinical populations served. Participates in ongoing monitoring and evaluation of effectiveness, including but not limited to, incident monitoring, patient/family satisfaction with services, monitoring of key systems of performance required to support the program and indicators of clinical quality. Regularly reviews reporting with nursing leadership. Implements new clinical programs and services.

* Compliance, Regulatory, and Policy Adherence

* Manages internal and external (governmental, industry) operating protocols, policy, and regulatory compliance. Supports monitors and communicates across sites regarding changes to operating policies and procedures. Assists with the development and implementation of new policies and procedures as appropriate. Coordinates internal audit visits, data collection and reporting per company policy.

* Administrative

* Manages special projects and facilitates growth/development activities for the service line. Analyzes, evaluates and reports statistical data to optimize the use of available resources and tools. Assists with preparation and monitors budgets to fulfill goals and objectives including planning workload and need for personnel, space, and equipment and support services. Monitors and drives operational budget performance.

* Employee Management

* Communicate and coordinate with Human Resources hiring, promotions, performance evaluations, salary increases, and disciplinary processes. Assist in the selection, employment, development, satisfaction and management of staff and providers. Coordinate and support the implementation of strong orientation and training programs. Oversee payroll in accordance with company policy. Coach and mentor providers and staff, and seek ways to improve engagement. Promote a culture of success, pride, performance, diversity, and creativity.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

* Bachelor s degree in Nursing, Healthcare Administration, Business or related field required. Master s preferred.

* Minimum of 5 years healthcare management or leadership experience required.

* Prior RN experience preferred.

* Previous experience with ED operations and/or medical practice management preferred, but other healthcare industry experience will be considered.

* Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

* Excellent attention to detail and organization skills.

* Strong process improvement and financial management expertise.

* Demonstrated administrative support skills typical in the healthcare industry including a working understanding of hospital, ED and medical infrastructure.

* Self-motivated and able to work independently or as part of a cross functional team.

* Demonstrated ability to communicate and work effectively with all levels of management, physicians, clinicians, support staff, patients and families.

* Proficiency with computers and MS Office (Word, PowerPoint, Access, Excel), Visio, Microsoft Project
