Annual Pay: $32,940.51

MAJOR FUNCTIONS

This is skilled work in the operation of highly sophisticated, specialized designed and complex solid waste -related equipment. An employee in this class operates heavy equipment with complex controls requiring a high degree of skill and knowledge. Efficient operation of this equipment is essential. Only broad, general supervision is received. Operates equipment in heavy traffic and in confined spaces. This is an emergency essential position that requires performance of emergency actions to prepare, repair and recover the City before, during and after any adverse storm events (hurricane, tornado, ice storm, tropical storm, etc.) or other conditions (natural or manmade).

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Operates a variety of complex solid waste equipment such as sophisticated automated side loaders, knuckle boom loaders, and rear loader trucks.
Collects solid waste from an assigned route and takes waste to appropriate sites for disposal.
Checks equipment for routine servicing needs and maintenance work when required.
Performs pre-trip/post-trip inspections for all equipment assigned.
Cleans solid waste debris off equipment and inside truck body on a daily basis.
Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Considerable knowledge of various types of solid waste equipment and associated hydraulic equipment.
Knowledge of the routing and street locations is preferred.
Good knowledge of traffic regulations and safe driving practices. Skill in the care and safe operation of assigned equipment.
Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public.
Knowledge of hazardous types of waste/materials.
An employee in this job is frequently exposed to outside weather conditions and to wet and/or humid conditions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Graduation from high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma.
Possession of a current Commercial Driver's License, class B
