Essential Functions Education - PhD in Chemistry or Materials Science Experience - 0-3 years of lab or industrial experience in analytical characterization, product formulation and/or structure-property determination. Summary Role Description - Newpark R&D group is seeking a qualified entrepreneurial technical person for a multidisciplinary role to grow its packaged chemicals business that covers a broad product mix including consumer and industrial chemicals. This is a key visible role requires customer interactions, lab operations, manufacturing quality control, regulatory understanding and product development. This is primarily a hands-on role with some supervision of lab technicians. It is expected that the person stays current with scientific and technical best practices reported in literature. The role requires teamwork and regular internal communication with the division management, plant management and vendors. Job Responsibilities & Expectations - 1. Be a part of the new products development group that self-develop new formulated chemicals or modifies customer provided formulations. 2. Be comfortable in customary R&D lab work - chemistry experiments, analytical characterization, scaleup quality control, lab purchases, statistical analysis, data archiving and presentation. 3. Technical strength in physical-analytical chemistry, structure-property relationships, routine chemistry lab techniques such as spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, electrochemical analysis, thermal analysis, separation analysis, particle size, microscopy, viscometry, flash point and the various hybrid technologies (e.g. GC-MS and HPLC-MS), experimental design, independent literature/IP searching, and report writing. 4. Committed to Safety and Good Lab Practices in all tasks and all the time. Be a role model in documenting and leading the compliance to ISO, API and other quality standards. Responsible for using and maintaining LIMS operating system. 5. Committed to customer service excellence. Responsible for customer technical presentations, both in-person and virtually. 6. Comfortable with drafting Statement of Requirements with minimal supervision and exploring third party labs, manufacturing, and vendors to source samples and analytical services when needed. Understanding of formulation costing. Ability to develop alternate formulation to reduce cost. 7. Ability to learn and compile application test methods specific to projects such as detergency, stability, flow behavior, reactivity etc. Competency in developing formulation and relate the performance to the formulation components. 8. Ability to scope out new lab instrumentation to purchase, optimize fit-for-purpose configurations, gather vendor quotes, present coherent rationale to purchase, install and standardize usage. 9. Ability to learn and apply environmental and consumer safety regulations. Advice manufacturing team on chemical handling risks. Advise on developing SDS when needed. 10. General familiarity of chemical recycling. 11. Assist in troubleshooting plant manufacturing-processing issues and field performance issues when needed. 12. Stay current with pertinent vendors of chemicals and analytical services. Maintain technical relationship with key vendors - both current and prospective. 13. Responsibility for compiling and circulating internal-external technical bulletins. Stay current with published technical reports in pertinent work. Maintain active participation in ACS or pertinent professional groups. 14. Basic knowledge of patents. Knowledge of advanced literature-patent search tools such as Thompson-Reuters is a plus. Willingness to become proficient in IP-patent search and archiving. 15. Responsible for customer communications. Ability to manage projects. 16. Limited travel required within R&D centers, Manufacturing centers, customer and third party vendors. Education & Experience Requirements Bachelors of Science degree or educational equivalent. 8 years experience. Extensive knowledge of analyses and research and development efforts involved in the possible application of new chemical/ research projects, products and Technology within specific field. Position Summary Under minimal supervision, plans, conducts and directs research and /or development work on complex projects necessitating the origination and application of new and unique approaches. Projects involve moderate capital expenditures. May lead chemist/scientist on challenging project with some functional supervision. May participate in vendor interface. Plans, conducts and supervises assignments. Reviews progress and evaluates results. May have personnel responsibilities. May represent the organization in outside discussions and technical forums.
