Position Description:
Medical Communications is a group within Medical Affairs with responsibility for development of scientific resources and tools, scientific publications and publication planning, outreach efforts for clinical trial recruitment, the medical education grants program, and congress planning and support. The candidate will report to the group leader (Vice President of Medical Affairs) and will focus on development of scientific resources related to the Exelixis development pipeline and management of the clinical trial recruitment program. This role will provide an outstanding opportunity to work in a cross-functional environment including interactions with other Medical Affairs functions, Clinical Development, Public Affairs, and external vendors. Strong project management, computer, and communication skills, attention to detail and the demonstrated ability to clearly communicate complex material and lead initiatives are essential to success.

Position Requirements:
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Pipeline Scientific Resource Development
o Develop engaging educational strategies and materials related to Exelixis pipeline compounds

  • Develop strategies to communicate mechanism of action, preclinical validation, treatment landscape, and clinical data related to novel Exelixis compounds for the education of healthcare providers.

  • Tactics may include slide decks, interactive touch screen programming or web resources, animated videos, printed materials, etc.

  • Work with others in Medical Affairs, Discovery, Public Affairs and Clinical Development to align materials and approaches as needed
    o Serve as a scientific resource to the Medical Communications group for the mechanisms of action and treatment landscape related to development compounds in the Exelixis pipeline
    o Manage vendors, timelines, budgets as appropriate

    • Clinical Trial Recruitment project
    o Development and execution of tactical plans for clinical trial awareness. Tactics will include materials development, advertising, social media activities, website development, congress support, site materials, patient advocacy group interactions, etc.
    o Coordination of recruitment activities with multiple clinical development teams
    o Management of regulatory review of materials
    o Development of congress materials and awareness tactics
    o Coordination with Public Affairs and patient advocacy groups
    o Vendor management


    • Other Activities
    o As needed, contribute to other ongoing projects within the Scientific Communications group including development of congress materials and congress planning, scientific publications, and educational materials used by the medical field team.
    o Develop product and disease state expertise and keep abreast of the changing drug development landscape
    o Attend scientific conferences to enhance therapeutic knowledge and to contribute to execution of Medical Affairs conference deliverables.

    EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/SKILLS:
    Education:
    • Doctorate level degree (PharmD, MD, PhD) with at least five years of related experience; or,
    • Master's level degree in related discipline and eight years of related experience; or,
    • Equivalent combination of education and experience.


    Experience:
    • Oncology/hematology background or experience preferred
    • Previous project management experience preferred
    • 3-5+ years' experience in the biotech or pharmaceutical industry is desirable
    • Familiarity with clinical trial operation is desirable
    • Previous Scientific/Medical Communications and/or Medical Science Liaison experience a plus

    • Skilled at communicating complex material in a clear and engaging manner
    • Excellent organizational, time, and project management skills
    • Detail-oriented
    • Excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills
    • Strong interpersonal and collaboration competencies for interfacing with a wide range of internal and external cross-functional partners
    • Ability to foster relationships, build alignment, negotiate, and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders
    • Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects in a fast-paced and dynamic environment
    • Well spoken, confident, enthusiastic, and positive can-do attitude
    • Working knowledge of legal and regulatory guidelines in the pharmaceutical industry
    • Proficient in MS Word, Excel, and Power Point
    • Occasional travel is required, including some weekends


    JOB COMPLEXITY:
    • Works in a fast-paced, small-team environment that is growing and evolving. This position requires regular reprioritization of projects while adhering to timelines and achievement of deliverables.
    • Some travel required (up to 20%) to support medical affairs activities at scientific congresses and company meetings, and to provide oversight to external contracted organizations.
