Responsible for the design, testing, and implementation of sterile and non-sterile packaging systems for all company product lines, including labeling. Provides project management for support of new product introductions, line extensions and external development alliances.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities


  • Working with R&D leadership to formulate strategies for packaging development, verification and validation. Collaboration with corporate package engineering teams to share knowledge and best practice.

  • Develop package designs for new and existing product families including the development of assembly, component and material specifications. Support product label generation including label format development. Help to identify user needs that pertain to packaging including usability requirements. Develop strategies for formative and summative usability tests. Contribute to risk management for hazards related to packaging.

  • Responsible for verification testing of packaging including writing of test protocols, coordinating test sample builds, coordinating testing activities with external laboratories, and writing reports.

  • Providing support for manufacturing transfer of new and revised packaging designs including participation in discussions on equipment selection, specification review, and process validation. Collaborate with multiple functions including manufacturing engineering, quality, supplier quality, and external contract manufacturers

  • Provide sustaining engineering support as required on issues related to existing packaging including process validations, process improvements, cost saving and specification updates. Support quality control in dispositioning product held in material review board for packaging related issues.

  • Address corrective actions associated with packaging including being an owner for packing related corrective and preventative actions (CAPAs). Responsibility includes determination and remediation of gaps created by updates to regulations, and industry or corporate standards.

Expected Areas of Competence


  • Effectively manages multiple priorities with high quality expectations in a team-based environment.

  • Ability to effectively work within a team to expedite completion of critical project tasks with other functional groups.

  • Working knowledge of medical device design controls, risk management, usability and other quality system standards.

  • Working knowledge of US and ISO standards related to packaging and labeling; including ISO11607.

  • Working knowledge of materials typically used for sterile and non-sterile medical device packaging

  • Good communication, teamwork and organizational skills are essential.

  • Computer sills including proficiency using Microsoft Office Suite.

Education/Experience Requirements


  • B.S. in packaging engineering, mechanical, or industrial engineering plus 3-5 years’ experience in medical device packaging and labeling, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Travel Requirements


  • Up to 10%
