The Tool & Cutter Grinder - 1st Shift sets up and operates conventional and/or CNC machines to fabricate metallic and nonmetallic parts, applying knowledge of machine shop theory and procedures, shop mathematics, maintainability of materials, and layout techniques.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
Design and make jigs, fixtures, and tooling to solve engineering problems and support manufacturing. Rework tooling and/or fixturing as needed to support the manufacturing departments.
Check specifications against dimensions or information furnished using precision measuring devices such as comparators, dial indicators, micrometers, gauges, gauge blocks, sine bar, calipers, height gauges, and level protractor. May assist in design of items as required.
Notify appropriate department of ideas for improvement, changes, or flaws detected in designs. Suggest possible changes or substitutes as needed.
Conduct special Engineering, R&D, or manufacturing projects requiring hands-on experience and capabilities to be determined by Management which may include machining, designing, or manufacturing.
Assist in maintaining all machine shop documentation including work request forms, logs, notebooks, sketches and drawings.
Clean and maintain machine shop in a neat, orderly, and safe condition.
Knowledge of materials and heat treating/stress relieving procedures.
Ability to estimate time required to produce a part.
Performs basic CNC programming tasks.
Expected Areas of Competence
Proficiency to operate mechanical test equipment and machine shop equipment such as band saws, drill presses, lathes, mills, and surface grinders.
Proficiency with precise measuring devices such as comparators, dial indicators, micrometers, sine bars, vernier calipers, precision gauges, gauge blocks, calipers, height gauges and level protractors.
Ability to read and interpret engineering blueprints.
Ability to design and fabricate high precision tooling for a CNC Swiss screw machine.
Education/Experience Requirements
High School Diploma or GED or equivalent combination of education and experience.
A minimum of 10 years machining experience in prototype or tooling type environment using both manual and CNC equipment required; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
