The Principal Strategic Marketing Specialist is a highly visible role on the Medtronic Diabetes Marketing team, responsible to help d evelop a cohesive vision across the organization that tells the broader product solution story to the market. The goal is to explain not only what each product offers, but also the combined value proposition of the entire suite of products and services. To deliver a compelling story to the market about the solution's overall value proposition.

Success in this role will be in the ability to develop strategy that is validated through a deep understanding of Voice of Customer and the Customer Journey, translated to insights that reimagines the diabetes solutions of the future. The solution needs to be rationalized against individual products, given fixed resources; to distinguish and prioritize between the strength of individual products against the backdrop of the system; to s et and track broad business goals for the portfolio as a whole by shifting focus toward product solutions and markets that show the most promise.

A Day in the Life




  • Establish vision to position Medtronic Diabetes as a market leader - Shift thinking from improving products and features to developing innovations to win the diabetes technology category, in order to shape the future of the diabetes technology category
  • Product and Services Roadmap - Establish the vision and strategic direction of our diabetes management solutions. Align cross functional stakeholders around a holistic vision for a roadmap that delivers the desired value of our products and services to our customers

  • Reimagine what diabetes technology means to customers - Innovate on how diabetes technology and neighboring categories can pivot, discover opportunities to lead the next gen solutions by innovating new ways to solve customer pain points

  • Data-driven Customer Vision - Partner with cross-functional teams to collect and analyze voice of customer data to support an aligned, customer-centric strategy across their journey at the product, program, and solution level

  • Identify and develop a point of view on the positioning of the product by doing competitive assessments and industry analysis and combining with customer insight to deliver value

  • Competitive Intelligence - Monitor direct and extended competitive space to inform product line and design to deliver differentiated unique value based on customer needs (market differentiated with high customer value)

  • Influence product roadmaps to deliver on the solution-level value proposition - Advocate for cross-product vision by defining high standard experience requirements for the products in the portfolio to adhere to

  • Prioritize the projects that will have the most significant impact on the portfolio based on its contribution to the diabetes technology solution. The focus isn't so much on surfacing specific market needs and voids and figuring out how your individual products can meet those needs, but on the overall solution across products and services.

  • Strategic Planning - Work cross functionally to develop strategies that guide upstream product development, downstream commercialization, and business development decisions

  • Build partnerships with key stakeholders and utilize business analytics to spot trends, opportunities and key issues facing the business; work with leadership to assemble action plans and appropriate business models to address those issues

  • Independently identify and manage special projects. Apply knowledge of and experience in company operations to assist in the development, implementation and administration of project guidelines and procedures. Identify and implement process improvements.

  • Attend major medical meetings, sales meetings, and meet with customers and field representatives regularly to gather information, identify needs, and assess opportunities to help drive marketing programs.

  • Anticipate, identify, and resolve high-level problems associated with project execution.

  • Motivate and influence cross-functional team members in achievement of goals.

  • Travel approximately 25%

Must Have: Minimum Requirements


  • Bachelors degree required
  • Minimum of 7 years of relevant experience in consulting, research and analytics, or advanced degree with a minimum of 5 years.


Nice to Have


  • Experience in development of standardized business reporting

  • Ability to seamlessly move between discussions with Engineers, internal stakeholders, and external partners


  • Egoless ideation, leveraging the collective power of the team to get to the best possible ideas & solutions.


  • Experience in a high performing marketing or strategic planning environment demanding a sophisticated approach to understanding market trends and impacts, including the ability to translate scenarios for how future markets and landscapes will evolve
  • Evidence of having successfully developed and/or led programs or product roadmaps to influence management decisions in a meaningful way
  • Strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication, influential, financial, business analytics, project management, and presentation skills
  • Collaborative approach, experience working in a highly matrixed environment to improve the acquisition and leveraging of market intelligence
  • Strategic agility and structured thinking, intellectual curiosity
  • Experience working in the medical device and healthcare industry
  • Proven ability to build and/or participate in cross-functional teams across an organization, including scoping, leading projects, and driving collaborative decision-making with cross-operating unit teams
  • Strong negotiation and influence management skills
  • Self-starter comfortable taking initiative
  • Flexibility to adapt to evolving business and team needs
  • In-depth understanding of current and future diabetes therapies
  • Strategic and tactical marketing skills
  • Strong team orientation
  • Ability to work in an ambiguous environment

  • Must be a hands-on subject matter expert, focused on results and execution


  • Global marketing experience


  • Demonstrated ability to plan, organize, monitor, and execute marketing projects
