Job Description:


The Humanities Division of the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown is seeking candidates for an adjunct faculty position teaching college composition to undergraduates. The successful applicant will be well qualified to teach courses in English Composition to a diverse student population. The start date for these positions is January 2021. Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to: 1. designing a course syllabus for either Composition 1 or 2 in accordance with UPJ standards and guidelines provided by the Humanities Chair; 2. providing well-prepared, appropriately designed, carefully focused classes to college students that emphasize the writing process and help students to produce essays that show structure, purpose, focus, audience awareness, and demonstrate an awareness of standard conventions of formal writing; 3. informing students of course requirements, evaluation procedures and attendance requirements; 4. preparing and grading class assignments, essays, and examinations and informing students of their academic progress; 5. maintaining attendance, scholastic, and personnel records and submitting them according to published deadlines; 6. advertising/posting and holding sufficient and regular office hours in accordance with prevailing policy. 7. engaging in department program improvement initiatives; 8. maintaining current knowledge in the subject matter area and effective teaching/ learning strategies; 9. demonstrating appropriate standards of professional conduct and ethics; Education/Experience: The applicant must possess one of the following qualifications (earned degrees must be from an accredited college/university: 1. Master's degree in Rhetoric and Composition, English Literature, Comparative Literature, Creative Writing, or Journalism. Desirable Qualifications: Demonstrated commitment to student learning and to the success of all students in the open-access learning environment of a community college; 2. Demonstrated sensitivity to issues of diversity, and ability to motivate and teach community college students of diverse ethnic and racial backgrounds, sexual orientations, genders, cultures, and learning styles, as well as students with disabilities or varied levels of academic preparation; 3. Training and/or experience in teaching developmental reading, writing, composition, and critical thinking classes, as well as a willingness to teach other courses in the discipline as needed; 4. Commitment to innovation and improvement of teaching, and interest in building a strong reading and writing program; 5. Commitment to professional and personal growth through activities such as the practice of writing, participation in conferences or workshops, and/or involvement in other relevant organizations or work; 6. Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a small-campus setting that requires involvement and responsibilities from each member; 7. Strong interpersonal skills and collaborative spirit; 8. Recent experience teaching college level composition; 9. Evidence of teaching effectiveness; 10. Ph.D. in Rhetoric and Composition or English Literature preferred; master's degree in those disciplines required.
