CNT is looking for a capable Programmer/Analyst. The successful candidate will maintain existing USGS computer program activities as well as act as a Lead within the WARC Advanced Applications Branch. This position requires mastery of, and skills applying, advanced computer science knowledge and experience to address bureau-wide challenges related to Earth sciences using existing or novel technology, computational theory, and data science. The following are the requirements:

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Responsible for software and Infrastructure Architecture
  • Facilitate the storage, QA/QC, reporting, and dissemination of multi-scale biological and ecological field observation data. This role will span many projects within the Advanced Applications Team
  • Plan, direct, coordinate and participate in team activities such as software architecture, multi-language programming, unit testing, user interface design, software/hardware deployment and training. Teams under the direction of the incumbent may include contractors and part-time aides
  • Mastery of, and skill in applying, computer science-computational theory, design patterns, programming language theory, etc.- to design modeling frameworks, computer simulations, complex data visualizations, and custom data collection and transmission interfaces as components of decision support systems
  • The incumbent will take an active role on applicable Department/Bureau level committees; lead a team composed of contractors and students and will serve as Task Order Manager for contractors
  • Publish findings addressing challenges related to data management, computation theory, data visualization, hardware performance, data acquisition, computer graphics, data transformation, and data standards generation and compliance
  • Adhere to existing, and plan and develop new data, coding, and information sharing standards addressing biological, geomorphological, and hydrologic data challenges across the Gulf of Mexico
  • Develop, review, and critique technical aspects of decision support systems, software modeling frameworks, and data visualization tools
  • Work with cooperators and subject matter experts on science, resource management, and technology teams, which will require the incumbent to drive and attend off-site meetings.
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Supervisory/Management Authority:

  • This position may coordinate with client representatives as a lead in the department

    Education and/or Experience:



    • A Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or a closely related field is required
    • Seven (7) to ten (10) years of relevant work experience; preferably in a federal government setting


    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

    • Working knowledge of requirements documentation, database/software architecture, coding, code review, user interface (UI) development, UI testing, and UI documentation.
    • Skills with designing, developing, maintaining, testing and performance tuning approximately five geospatial and/or tabular web applications. Documenting, creating, maintaining, tuning, testing and administering approximately ten databases served by SQL Server, Oracle and PostgreSQL relational database systems in both local and cloud-hosted environments.
    • Ability to actively participate and in some cases lead meetings focused on the design phase of new projects, and to iteratively analyze the design of existing systems, especially in relation to database and API architecture
    • Excellent critical thinking, problem solving and communication skills; both oral and written
    • Some local travel as needed
    • Successfully pass a drug screen and federal background check is required


    Work Environment:


  • This position is performed in a federal office environment. Work is primarily sedentary in nature.
