Job Description:

The Data Integration, Reporting and Analytics (DIRA) group in the Research Computing Division at RTI International has an opening for a Biological Data Modeler to support and promote data interoperability, contribute to development of informatics tools and analysis of complex data sets. This position primarily supports biomedical research projects. A fundamental understanding of biology, experience with programming languages and demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential.

Residing in the DIRA Group of the Research Computing Division, the Biological Data Modeler will have access to colleagues with expertise in data analysis, high performance computing and software engineering. Most work is accomplished by interdisciplinary teams, promoting innovation and collaboration.

The location of this position is Research Triangle Park, North Carolina.

Responsibilities

- Work with colleagues to develop tools and methods to enhance data interoperability

- Schedule and track data releases and provide data release reports to funding agencies

- Manage a data contribution forecasting and tracking system to allow effective resource allocation across the supported consortia

- Construct solutions that integrate different technologies

- Learn new software and/or programming languages as needed

- Contribute to interdisciplinary teams; be a team player

- Train data contributors in the use of data validation and upload tools.

- Contribute to proposals and business development efforts

Qualifications

- BS in Computer Science, Bioinformatics, Biology or related discipline and 5 years of experience. Equivalent experience equals a MS and 3 years of experience.

- Experience with RESTful API standards

- Excellent knowledge of data formats including JSON, XML, CSV, etc.

- Experience with compiled and dynamic / scripting languages: e.g. Python, R

- Experience with Object oriented languages, e.g. Java

- Experience in relational databases (SQL Server, MySQL, or PostgreSQL)

- Experience analyzing biological data

- To qualify, applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States and should not now or in the future, require sponsorship for employment visa status.

Preferred Qualifications

- Experience with cloud databases including AWS and Azure

- Master Data Management and Data Governance approaches and tooling

- Experience working on 'Big Data platforms', enabling non-technical users to gain insight into biomedical research data

- Use and/or development of data analysis and/or data visualization tools, e.g. R

- Triple store or RDF store

- Analysis of 'omics' data, including sequence assembly and analysis
