About the Job

The Supervisor, Clinical Bioinformatics Operations is a leadership position overseeing the analysis and delivery of Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) data to clinicians, pharmaceutical partners, and academic collaborators. In addition, the position is responsible for collecting and presenting quality metrics and reviewing variant reports. This job takes place inside of FMI's high-complexity clinical diagnostic laboratory setting in which chemicals and reagents are present.

This is a regulated position and additional information may be available from QA on the qualifications for this role pertaining to regulatory guidelines.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop annotated genomic profiles of somatic aberrations based on massively parallel sequencing (NGS) data, in the context of studies of cancer-patient samples.


  • Review genomic variant calls using proprietary and publicly available tools (e.g., Integrative Genomics Viewer), in collaboration with the scientific team.


  • Provide test results according to standard operating procedures with the best possible quality within defined turn-around times.


  • Provide support for standard and advanced analysis data deliverables.


  • Provide consultation, technical support, and guidance to clinical analysts.


  • Develop and foster growth and educational opportunities for Clinical Bioinformatics Analysts.


  • Train and supervise Clinical Bioinformatics Analysts.


  • Conduct biweekly 1:1 meetings and set performance objectives, semi-annual goals and reviews with the Clinical Bioinformatics Analysts.


  • Lead the training of new team members, including presentation of training topics, scheduling of training activities, and the tracking of sign-off for training completion.


  • Perform auditing and competency assessments of Clinical Bioinformatics Analysts.


  • Oversee daily and weekly operational tasks of laboratory staff.


  • Schedule and maintain team meetings including discussion topics and presentations.


  • Ensure Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) are up to date with current workflows and conduct modifications to ensure implementation into the daily workflow.


  • Identify quality issues and support Clinical Bioinformatics Analysts in the preparation and completion of non-conformances, planned deviations, incident reporting, and SOP updates in settings adherent to Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA), College of American Pathologists (CAP) and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations.


  • Be involved in on-call and ensure Clinical Bioinformatics Analysts are equally involved in on-call rotation and effectively deliver under strict time constraints.


  • Demonstrate leadership on collaborative or individual specialized projects.


  • Oversee and coordinate operational and developmental projects for direct reports.


  • Support the Clinical Bioinformatics leadership team on key company initiatives including representation at core team meetings.


  • Fill in when necessary for periodic weekend or off-hours shifts.


  • Other duties as assigned.

    Qualifications


    Basic Qualifications



  • Bachelor's Degree in a bioinformatics, biology, or a related scientific field


  • 2+ years of cancer genomics experience in an academic or life sciences environment

    Preferred Qualifications



  • Master of Science or PhD in bioinformatics, biology, or a related scientific field


  • 1+ year of management experience


  • Experience with Next-Generation Sequencing


  • Experience with bioinformatics tools and databases (NCBI, UCSC Genome Browser, IGV)


  • Experience working within a CLIA certified clinical diagnostics laboratory


  • Substantive genomics research experience in rigorous academic setting


  • Scripting ability in Python or Perl


  • Facility with UNIX environment


  • Strong knowledge of cancer genetics


  • Strong interpersonal skills that include excellent skills in verbal and written communication, collaboration, and cross-functional problem solving


  • Excellent organization and attention to detail


  • Understanding of HIPAA and importance of privacy of patient data
