The Global Network Architecture and Engineering organization at Equinix is seeking a seasoned Senior Network Engineer to design, prototype, develop test/automation software for provisioning and restoration of interconnection services on high capacity next generation optical DWDM and photonic switching networks infrastructure that interconnect global Equinix data centers. This data center optical interconnection networks infrastructure includes high capacity multi-vendor optical networks with service automation for provisioning and self-healing with software defined network (SDN) that serves as backbone for Equinix packet and cloud interconnection services and provide optical transport services. Equinix’s 200+ global data centers (known as Internet Business Exchanges TM or IBXs) provide space, power, network interconnections, programmability, large scale and high performance for Equinix customers.

The ideal candidate would have extensive experience in the automation of data/optical systems and network services and proven experience in a dev-ops environment

Responsibilities


  • Network engineering, test and implement optical transport and switching systems in to Equinix global data center interconnect networks

  • Participates in the development and /or creates troubleshooting guides and trains the NSE team on the platform and how to troubleshoot issues

  • Develop scripts for test automation on the optical transport platforms for internal team and for external operational uses.

  • Maintain internal test automation environment

  • Develop training materials for automation environment

  • Participates with NSE as needed to troubleshoot layer 0-3 network (Layer 0 being the Photonics Layer) issues experienced by end customers and service providers

  • Translates high level architectural designs into platform configurations, and develops design changes based on testing and iterations

  • Responsible for developing methods of procedure that implement the design changes in the network platforms

  • Creates design guidelines and recommends migration procedures to support deployment execution and completion

  • Creates engineering deployment packages (EDPs), including rack elevation drawings, space and power requirements, cable run lists, and any other site-specific documentation

  • Performs first installation of new technology or services

  • Completes documentation for use by Operations (EDPs, configurations, and training guides)

  • Completes commission readiness

  • Supports install, maintain and support Element Management Systems (EMS)

  • Maintains system backups, security and performance for lab systems

  • Supports deployment of layer 0-3 network services

  • Develops test plans and strategies to exercise platforms, including feature performance, load stress redundancy, operational alarms and metrics

  • Develops and executes software test plans and procedures and develop Methods of Procedures (MOPS)

  • Develops and improves regression and acceptance tests

  • Performs hands-on tests to validate proof of concepts, network design, network deployment, and introduction of services and features

  • Works collaboratively with NSEs and Software teams

  • Provides feedback on how testing results can result in design changes to the Network Architecture team and platform vendors

  • Analyzes platform near term roadmaps and makes recommendations for release upgrades

  • Feedback test results for inclusion in future vendor releases

  • End to end testing of integrated solutions/services including BSS, OSS, and Software Engineering, with Network platforms/elements

  • Creates new and innovative test strategies for tests in laboratory and field-testing environments

  • Provides feedback on how testing results can result in design changes to the Network Architecture team and platform vendors

  • Develops scripts that are the basis for test automation and incorporated into a test automation framework

  • Develops training guide and conducts training of NSE personnel

Qualifications


  • Must have 10+ experience testing or production optical transport systems (DWDM/ROADM/Optical Switches etc.) @10G/100G/200G/400G, packet optical transport/routing/switching

  • Familiar with vendors like Ciena, Infinera, Adva

  • Knowledgeable Layer 0 Control Plane (GMPLS, ASON, WSON)

  • Scripting and Test Automation Experience (Python is a MUST).

  • Five or more years of transport SDN/Telecom network management protocols development like Netconf/Yang/XML/JSON/SOAP/OpenConfig/RestConf/GRPC/GNMI/Rest APIs preferred

  • Solid understanding of Software Defined Networks for Datacenter Networking including one or more of the following controllers/orchestrators: Cisco/Tail-f/NSO, NOKIA/NUAGE, NEC/NETCRACKER, ONOS

  • Some experience in one or more of the following areas: large-scale, mission-critical applications, network management systems, Operations Support Systems, general large-scale system architecture or large-scale databases

  • Demonstrated knowledge of major industry standards: TMF, TNM, ETSI, ITU, ONF, Telcordia, etc.

  • Familiarity with test/troubleshoot/root cause analysis for optical DWDM and switching equipment hardware and software from Ciena/Infinera/Cisco/Coriant/Nokia/Juniper/BTI etc.

  • Familiarity with optical test equipment (traffic generators, OSA, OTDR, CD/PMD, BERT, and optical power meters, etc.)

  • Familiarity with optical cabling standards in data centers or telco central offices

  • Familiarity with automation frameworks for optical networking labs or production networks

  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills

  • Strong project management and organizational skills

  • BS/MS in CS/EE or equivalent preferred
