GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:

The Office of the Scientific Director (OSD) of the Mass General Research Institute (MGRI) is a strategic department designed to provide the resources and infrastructure needed to more effectively promote Mass General research externally, better support Mass General investigators internally, and help guide Mass General research to foster large-scale, team-based efforts. The MGRI core mission is to sustain and grow our research enterprise into the next decade by establishing new funding models that will augment federal sources with significant industrial and philanthropic support.

The senior program manager, under the supervision of the Scientific Director, is responsible for the overall administration, operations and fiscal management of the office of the scientific director. In addition, the incumbent provides oversight of program development, strategic priorities, and human resources management. This position directly supervises OSD staff, including three program managers, communications and administrative staff. The senior program manager will collaborate on research-related initiatives involving Research Management, ECOR, CFD, DCR and other offices of the MGRI. She/he will liaise and collaborate with other appropriate groups within the broader Mass General and MGB communities and other external partners including Harvard institutions, the Broad Institute, MIT, etc.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

* In collaboration with the Scientific Director, the OSD team, and other stakeholders, the senior program manager contributes to the determination of the overall vision, mission, direction, goals and objectives of the OSD. Participates in the strategic planning process and establishment and achievement of long-range goals, ensures that strategic initiatives that are aligned with the vision, strategic plan, and goals of the MGRI, and works with the Mass General research community to implement these initiatives.

* Directly responsible for the overall administrative management and day-to-day operations of the OSD staff, including human resource and fiscal functions.

* Plans, develops agendas, and manages meetings of the OSD, special events and conferences.

* Develops and implements policies and procedures, consistent with Mass General and MGB policies, to achieve OSD programs and strategic initiatives.

* Plans, develops, and oversees Communicating Science initiatives including programs and implementation of events with such as the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science, HUBweek, and the Cambridge Science Festival.

* Relationship management between various internal and external stakeholders in the research enterprise at Mass General including Research Support IS (RSIS), the Harvard Healthcare Innovation Network group (formed with Harvard Business School, Harvard Office of Technology Development, BWH Research Institute and Boston Children s Hospital), Network Development, the Healthcare Transformation Lab, Mass General Neuroscience, the Department of Medicine, and others.

* Supervise operational management of the Bridging Academia with Industry training program.

* Manage and maintain fiscal operations of the training program including accounting of donor funding and disbursement.

* Provide oversight on logistics and operational structure of the course.

* Participate in grant submissions and proposal preparation for funding the training program.

* Development: Works with the Mass General Development office to garner support for MGRI programs and assist with function planning relating to research fund raising events. Development activities include:

* Primary connection between the OSD and the Development office.

* Provide information about investigators, research programs and research leadership for meetings, proposals and reports related to philanthropic support of the Research Institute and its programs.

* Develop and provide presentation materials to be used in Development activities, such as presentations, talking points, agendas, and briefing documents.

* Work with the Development communications team to include research news stories in various Mass General media venues and on the MGH Giving website.

* Assist with development and execution of events showcasing the Research Institute and its programs for philanthropic audiences. Tasks may include contacting guest speakers for RIAC/Advancement Committee meetings, coordinating event follow up, etc.

* Collaborate with the Development office on RIAC activities and member outreach

* Assist researchers in developing and maintaining project descriptions and other content for promoting their research externally (such as on crowd-funding pages)

* Follow up action plans related to RIAC and advancement initiatives for Research.

* Work with the RI marketing team to develop appropriate collateral and videos for philanthropic audience and Research Scholars program.

* Work closely with RI marketing and Development marketing groups to promote the MGH Research Scholars program (including presentations and coaching of recipients).

* Keeping up to date records of MGHRS headshots, titles and bios and sharing with development

* Managing oversight of the MGHRS webpages

* Administering the annual research accomplishment survey, collecting responses and providing to development for writing and formatting of reports.

* Marketing/Communications: Supervises the OSD Communications team to promote Mass General research internally and externally.

* Gathers and makes accessible to the research community via electronic newsletters, special announcements, and through contributions to research websites, research related news from the research community. Management of timelines on monthly newsletters including From the Lab Bench, Snapshot of Science, and quarterly MGH Research Scholars Notebook.

* Contributes to the research intranet (internal), the Mass General public site and contributes to the content and development of other research-related websites.

* Develops other resources and mechanisms for raising internal awareness of research at Mass General with the goal of facilitating collaborations across traditional boundaries.

* Ensures that RI programs, activities, and major events relating to basic, translational, clinical research, and population health are appropriately vetted to Public Affairs. Assists the OSD communications team and the MGB Marketing and Mass General Public Affairs offices in establishing an internal and external identity for research at Mass General.

* Acts as a liaison between professional staff, support staff and external customers.

* Works with Human Resources to resolve personnel issues, bonus programs, equity analysis, and the hiring of new staff.
