Postdoctoral Research Associate - Advanced Manufacturing Modeling & Control - HPC at Oak Ridge National Laboratory

Posted in Other 30+ days ago.

Type: Full Time
Location: Knoxville, Tennessee

Job Description:

Requisition Id 3247

Purpose
Advanced manufacturing systems such as steel making is complicated and its controls rely on a good modelling. In this context, high-performance computing (HPC) is used as the first step to build up comprehensive models that reflect the dynamics of the system. However, using HPC model directly would lead to complicated control algorithms that cannot be implemented in practice. The work for this position is therefore to develop HPC models using computational fluid dynamics simulation and then develop reduced order models for control system design and system performance assessment. The position resides in the TRANSPORTATION ANALYTICS AND DECISION SCIENCES GROUP in the Energy and Environmental Sciences Directorate, where you will be supervised by Dr. Hong Wang https://www.ornl.gov/staff-profile/hong-wang-0.

Main Responsibilities/Duties
- Working with project university partner to develop HPC models for steel making processes in particular ladle and electrical arc furnace processes;
- Conduct simulation exercises using ORNL supercomputing facilities;
- Develop reduced order modelling that captures main dynamics of the systems;
- Design relevant optimization and control strategies that can be used to predict system performance and optimize the system operation;
- Write technical reports, give presentation at conferences and publish paper in journals together with activities related to future funding planning and research.

Basic Qualifications
You are expected to have a PhD degree in dynamics systems with experience in system modelling and control. Research background on data-driven modelling, system optimization and reduced order modelling is desired.
Applicants cannot have received the most recent degree more than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment.

The appointment length will be up to 12 months with the potential for extension. Initial appointments and extensions are subject to performance and availability of funding.

This position will remain open for a minimum of 5 days after which it will close when a qualified candidate is identified and/or hired.
We accept Word (.doc, .docx), Adobe (unsecured .pdf), Rich Text Format (.rtf), and HTML (.htm, .html) up to 5MB in size. Resumes from third party vendors will not be accepted; these resumes will be deleted and the candidates submitted will not be considered for employment.

If you have trouble applying for a position, please email ORNLRecruiting@ornl.gov.

ORNL is an equal opportunity employer. All qualified applicants, including individuals with disabilities and protected veterans, are encouraged to apply. UT-Battelle is an E-Verify employer.
