The Allegheny Intermediate Unit is currently seeking an Early Head Start Infant Health Specialist for its Early Head Start Program. The AIU Early Head Start Program works with families to promote children’s development; supports parent’s efforts to fulfill their parental roles; helps families move forward toward self-sufficiency and assists pregnant women with access to prenatal and postpartum care.

Job Title: Early Head Start Health Specialist

Position Summary:

The Early Head Start Health Specialist is responsible for the implementation of the Early Head Start Performance Standards as they relate to health service area and overall infant/toddler development. The Early Head Start Health Specialist will support the role of parents in the health of their children/family and oversees the health care planning for children in the AIU Early Head Start Program.  The Early Head Start Health Specialist will monitor health, oral health practices, and environmental safety and nutrition services. This position is responsible for coordinating and conducting staff and parent trainings. Will support in coordinating and facilitating the Health Service Advisory Committee. The Early Head Start Health Specialist is also responsible for the data entry of health documentation.

Duties and Responsibilities:


  1. Ensures compliance with the Early Head Start Performance Standards especially as they relate to health, safety, and epsdt requirements.


  1. Provides detailed and comprehensive assessments of Early Head Start children presenting with physical health concerns which include researching and analyzing child health records, interviews of parents/guardians, healthcare workers, and agencies working with the child.

  1.  To collaborate and consult with pediatric office to obtain individualized healthcare plans for Early Head Start children with physical and health concerns.  Provides all documentation and communication necessary with parents and staff when a change in a child’s health status occurs and provides consultation as requested.

  1. Consults with primary care physicians and specialty care physicians in order to obtain approval signature for student individualized health care plans.  Consults with physicians on appropriate program interventions in the educational setting.

  1. Trains staff to comply with all Early Head Start health and safety standards.  Prepares and conducts staff training in the areas of Infant Safe Sleep, Shaken Baby, Nutrition Services, Emergency First Aide, Universal Healthcare Precautions and Infectious Diseases, Medication Administration and other global health related training as needed.  Provision of thorough staff training pertaining to the details specified in the individualized health care plan.

  1. Functions as a liaison between families, physicians and AIU staff and Child Care Partner staff for example, when a child has a medical emergency or requires hospitalization.  Provides information and an appropriate and safe plan for the child’s return to the educational environment.

  1. Assists in the development of policies and procedures related to medical health and safety issues related to children in the Early Head Start Program. 

  1. Participates in a variety of Early Head Start team meetings.

  1. Provide support to Early Head Start staff for enrolled pregnant women and fathers.

  1. Substitute for center based staff on as needed basis in accordance with Early Head Start Teacher accountabilities.

  2. Other duties as assigned.


  1. Registered Nurse or LPN required

  2. 2 years of experience in pediatrics required

  3. Adult, Infant, Child CPR preferred

  4. Supervisory experience required

  5. Knowledge and experience in pediatric and prenatal care

  6. Experience in consultation and training for staff and parents

  7. Excellent organizational skills, initiative, and an ability to work with limited supervision

  8. Excellent written and oral communication skills

  9. Ability and experience in working as a member of a team

  10. Skilled in the use of Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Power Point, Excel, Access, Outlook, and work with new technologies

Additional Requirements:


  1. Current Act 114, Act 34 and Act 151 required prior to an offer (Must be dated within 1 year of hire date).

  2. School Personnel Health Record (Form H511.340 (8/2011)) must be completed and received by Human Resources prior to hire date.

  3. Personal transportation, valid driver’s license and insurance required
