It is an exciting time to join Lilly. Our BioTDR center at San Diego is growing in key areas. Our research group focuses on discovering innovative biotherapeutic medicines saving lives and improving patients’ quality of life, by applying leading-edge protein discovery, engineering and characterization technologies. Make a significant difference by contributing to the development of novel biotherapeutics for unmet medical needs!

We are seeking an ambitious post-doctoral scientist to drive a high impact research project. This role will lead the development of machine learning-based virtual screening workflows to transform traditional antibody discovery practice into next-generation process with much higher capacity, speed, and quality. Embedded in computational biology group for large molecule research, in this role, you will:

  • Use your knowledge on structural biology and apply your computational skills to extract patterns and to bring disruptive insights from large and multi-parametric datasets encompassing antigen and antibody complexes and function.

  • Apply advanced data science technologies, for example, deep learning algorithms, to develop multivariate models for reliable paratope fingerprinting.

  • Interact closely and be part of interdisciplinary antibody screening and engineering teams to drive effective decision-making by mining data and developing predictive models.

  • Partner with colleagues of Information Technology to implement efficient and user-friendly predictive applications based on your research achievements into Lilly in-house informatics system for virtual screening.

  • Work in a highly collaborative environment at the Lilly Biotech Center at San Diego, including structural biologists, protein chemists, protein engineers, bioinformatician, statistician and IT professionals, as well as surrounding academic community.

  • Present findings at conferences and publish in high quality peer-reviewed journals.

This role will be embedded in Lilly’s Medicines Innovation Hub (MIH), which serves as leading-edge scientific unit working across all disease areas to identify and develop quality targets, hits, leads, and drug candidates.

Basic Qualifications

  • Ph. D. in data science, bioinformatics, computational biology, or life sciences with strong expertise in machine learning and data science or PhD with strong background in structural biology, computational protein science

Additional Skills/Preferences

If you are described with these skills, you could be a great fit for the role:

  • Proficient in data analysis and data mining using R or Python.

  • Ability to work both independently and in cross-functional teams.

  • Solid knowledge of antibody biology and discovery is a plus; prior research experience of antibody or antibody repertoire is desired.

  • Familiar with the foundational concepts in protein biochemistry.

  • Hands on experience with structural protein/antibody modeling (preferably using Molecular Operating Environment or Schrödinger) and descriptor calculation.

  • Comfortably work in a Linux cluster computational environment.

  • Self-directed and highly motivated individual who wants to learn new techniques while continually pursuing research and publication goals.

  • Excellent communicator (oral and written) with presentation experience, along with a strong publication record.

About Eli Lilly’s Postdoctoral Scientist Program

When it comes to research and development, our goal is to discover and deliver innovative medicines that make life better for people around the world. It’s challenging, expensive and often filled with failure. But even when we fail, we advance medical science and understanding by learning more about diseases, biology and chemistry – ultimately bringing new solutions one step closer to reality.

Over the course of our history, we have shed light on some of the toughest health care problems known to man – diabetes, heart disease, infectious diseases, neuroscience disorders, cancer and more. We could not pursue this without our research and development team. Postdoctoral scientists help us continue this pursuit. During your experience you will get:

  • Top industry research experience

  • Mentoring by some of Lilly’s top scientists

  • Training and coaching opportunities to further your development

  • Collaboration and networking across other postdoctoral scientists and researchers

Additional Information

  • This position is not permanent. It is for a fixed duration of two years with potential to extend to 3 years and for maximum of up to 4 years. You will have opportunities to apply for full time positions after your duration is complete.
