Job Summary

The and The Center for Lung Research at CHOP are dedicated to understanding the mechanisms underlying lung diseases and developing new strategies to prevent and treat these disorders. Research in the Zepp lab- is studying how cells communicate and integrate external cues during lung development and repair after injury. Specifically, the Zepp lab studies stromal cells, including smooth muscle and fibroblasts, and their relationship with the lung epithelium and vasculature. The Zepp lab employs a spectrum of methodologies for this research, such as genetic lineage tracing, animal models of pulmonary diseases, whole-organ 3D-imaging, and single-cell sequencing. These methods are being used to determine how fibroblast lineages are specified and maintained. Additionally, the Zepp lab is exploring how fibroblast activation contributes to chronic lung inflammation and translating these studies using primary human cells and tissue.

The Research Assistant II works closely with Dr. Zepp- in developing and implementing the scientific directions of the laboratory and assisting other staff and trainees. Experiments will utilize murine models, human samples, and in vitro cell culture systems for molecular studies.

This position requires specialized education in the biological sciences, with proficiency in relevant techniques for in vivo and/or in vitro molecular studies. The position requires exercise of discretion in the planning and interpretation of experiments, and of data derived.

Job Responsibilities

- Performs lab tests which require the analysis of results and interpretation of methods

- Performs research procedures on experimental samples as directed

- Assists with planning specific research protocols and procedures

- Assists in development & troubleshooting of new techniques and ideas

- Modifies methods and protocols under the direction of the PI

- Formulates and performs complex lab experiments and analyzes & reports the data

- Presents & discusses work at weekly lab meetings

- Prepares laboratory reagents and monitors and maintains inventory

- Performs calculations and maintains appropriate log books and lab notebooks

- Assists in writing methods and setting-up protocols accurately under the direction of the program director or senior scientist

- Maintains laboratory equipment, safety procedures and compliance records

- Researches journal, white papers and other scientific publications for pertinent information

- Assists with the preparation of data for publication or presentation at symposia

- May supervises junior members of laboratory.

- May be called upon to present at national symposia

- Supervises junior members of laboratory.

Required Education and Experience

- Bachelor's degree, 4-6 years scientifically relevant experience required

Preferred Education, Experience & Cert/Lic

- Master's degree preferred, 1-3 years scientifically relevant experience
