Position Summary

Red Lion Controls, an operating company of Spectris, has an opportunity for a Director of Product Management at its headquarters location in York, Pennsylvania. The role has significant overall business and P&L responsibility for Red Lion’s product portfolio and requires substantial interaction with the Leadership Team as well as colleagues throughout the organization.

Reporting to the Vice President of Strategic Marketing, the Director of Product Management will be responsible for leading the product management organization and driving the vision, strategy, roadmap, and product lifecycle for Red Lion’s product portfolio. Product Managers at Red Lion are true “General Managers” of their product lines with responsibility for a products’ life cycle including market positioning, long-term strategy, pricing, profit & loss, sales forecasting, and product roadmap. Successful Product Managers effectively collaborate with many entities throughout the organization including development & sustaining engineering, marketing, sales, operations and finance.

The Director, Product Management will identify and influence market trends and opportunities, analyze customer needs, and develop product strategies to penetrate key market verticals including oil and gas, water / wastewater, factory automation and energy. Based on corporate strategy, objectives, and budget, the Director of Product Management will be responsible for conceiving and defining innovative products that provide a high degree of value to our industrial customers.

Essential Job Functions
  • Manage the P&L for the product lines (profit, loss, pricing, margin, etc.). Monitor the revenue and profitability for each of the products and product families. Effect product enhancements or additions to increase both revenue and profitability.
  • Work collaboratively with internal personnel (marketing, engineering, sales and finance) and with external parties (distributors, customers, prospects, and partners) to identify and develop both the product and the product value proposition.
  • Lead development of long term strategic product plans that identify market trends and opportunities, understand competitive landscape and position Red Lion to gain market share
  • Overall responsibility for product life cycle including leading the product portfolio through the phase gate process from concept to end-of-life.
  • Establish thought leadership in the industry and use VOC (Voice of Customer) tools to understand customers’ technology needs, strategic direction and how Red Lion can tailor solutions that enhance customers productivity and efficiency
  • Will have strong financial acumen and accountability
  • Lead a team of Product Managers. A key deliverable for this role is to establish and develop a robust Product Management organization within Red Lion including talent, process management and discipline, business acumen and industry knowledge.

Key Qualifications:

  • The ideal candidate will have a technical background and education with a significant business component
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical, Material Science) preferred. MBA preferred
  • Strong team leadership and demonstrated ability to develop employees and the organization around them
  • 10+ years of product management experience, preferably for an electronics product line in a related industry; additional time in a technical sales position is also ideal
  • P&L management experience and knowledge
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate cross functionally and to influence without direct authority
  • Strong ability and demonstrated examples of ability to analyze and utilize data to drive business decisions
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills
  • Background in customer relations, particularly in managing a multiple-product line with a key customer
  • Experience in managing a full product life cycle
  • Excellent project management skills
  • Ability and willingness to travel as required
  • Strong negotiation abilities (experience in pricing or contract negotiations desirable)
  • Prefer candidates with knowledge in and experience with servicing the automation and networking industries
