Job Purpose

Responsible for driving continuous improvement of the total site's operational performance in terms of Safety, Quality, Cost, Delivery, and People development (SQCDP) to deliver demand at the lowest imaginable cost and highest degree of engagement. To be the guardian of AkzoNobel's Core principles and Values within Production.

Key Accountabilities

Key Responsibilities:
• Develops a passion for HSE&S, Sustainability and Quality in the operations team and reviews performance - setting targets for continuous improvement.
• Ensures delivery and communication of leading levels of all key performance indicators using short interval control processes (Leaders Standard Work) and leads the application of the AkzoNobel Leading Performance System (ALPS).
• Inspires and challenges the workforce to deliver results and continuously stretch personal performance and skills.
• Ensures a culture of learning and growing, providing regular opportunities for role rotation.
• Experienced in the IBP process and has a thorough understanding of customer needs and further proposes options for how best to continue delivering leading levels of service.
• Drives a lean continuous improvement programme across production, transferring best practice in and knowledge transfer out into the network.
• Understands the capabilities and constraints on the assets across the site and optimises the effective use of the assets to continually drive down operational cost.
• Financial management: understanding of key financials and the effective communication of this data - including delivery of the Financial targets for the site on a monthly basis.
• Acts as the Senior Manager on the production shop floor.
• People Management: capable of running all people related activity for the area - such as disciplinary appeals, LTR and creating a 1-2 year Team Development plan.
• Leads and develops high calibre people and teams to grow the talent pool and drive engagement - ensuring ownership of the people calendar across the division.

General Knowledge and Awareness:
• Ideally a good understanding of paint and coatings products and colour using batch processing as well as filling equipment.
• Desire to champion the Company Principles, Values as well as practice the AkzoNobel Leadership Essentials.
• Ability to interact effectively with Customers, Community and other AkzoNobel visitors on a regular basis.
• Ability to use Situational Leadership (SLII) to effectively manage and lead the team.
• Lead and manage the AkzoNobel Performance & Development (P&D) processs.
• Ability to use coaching and performance management techniques to develop the team and drive performance.
• Understand, and have the ability to use the EPIP/disciplinary procedures to maintain performance.

Key Activities

Technical Competence:
• Develop, implement and conduct process confirmation on strategic plans and tactical procedures.
• Develop annual strategies to train and maintain experienced personnel to maintain required processing capacities.
• Lead and coach employees to respond to and solve operational problems utilising Lean Manufacturing Techniques (ALPS).
• Ability to allocate personnel across the factory to prepare for/carry out all activities associated with delivering Safety, Quality, Cost, Delivery, and People (SQCDP).

• Lead by example and ensure team follows agreed and documented standard operating procedures to ensure world class safety and quality are maintained at all times.
• Coach team so they are competent in writing Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) based on risk assessment of the task or activity.
• Provide proactive response to any "Near Miss" reported by 'See it, Sort, Report it' or Behavioral Based Safety system.
• Audit teams working behaviours frequently and correct or report any failings and deficiencies in HSE&S, quality and sustainability procedures or processes.
• Provide feedback and recognition to positive HSE&S and Sustainability behaviours demonstrated by the team.
• Actively participate in HSE&S, quality and sustainability risk reduction programmes.
• Recognise HSE&S, quality and sustainability accountability in the P&D Dialogue process.
• Act in accordance with the AkzoNobel Code of Conduct.

Continuous Improvement:
• Develop processes within job holders area of responsibility to align with relevant ALPS elements.
• Coach and develop organisational capability in continuous improvement methodology in all areas of operation.
• Thoroughly understand the Houston operation to enable individual to coach, teach and develop site team.
• Lead, develop and review process confirmation activities to ensure compliance to operational standards.
• Understand and apply continuous improvement principles via ALPS to reduce and control loss and waste.
• Actively participate and provide detail to allow production of Standard Operating Procedure documentation.
• Optimise and continuously seek to improve processes and equipment using Quick Kaizen techniques and CI principles and tools.
• Demonstrate understanding and application of 5S in the workplace..
• Conduct equipment changeovers to set timings and standards
• Undertake Autonomous Maintenance activity to standard operating procedures.

• Experience and Educational Requirements:
• Graduate degree (or equivalent) in Engineering discipline or process driven professional experience/qualification.
• 5 - 10 years of managing employee Safely with relevant knowledge within the area of HSE per OSHA / PSM guidelines
• Significant experience of production responsibility with demonstrated high standards of quality and asset care.
• Significant experience of successfully implementing and sustaining lean manufacturing principles.
• Significant experience of lean leadership and strategy translation (Hoshin).
• Continuous Improvement (CI) certification as Green Belt, Black Belt or Lean Coach.
• Demonstarted experience of sponsoring CI projects to deliver outstanding results.
• Line Management and performance management experience.
• Coaching training and experience.
• Employee engagement and employee relations (including development of culture).
• Project Management or Client User Representative experience.
• Manufacturing knowledge and experience.
• Quality compliance experience.
• Experience of leading and managing change.
